NVX XEQ7 7-Band Graphic Stereo Equalizer

There’s simply no such thing as a “one-size-fits-all” audio system. To enjoy your system to the fullest, it needs to be tuned and tailored to not only your specific tastes, but also to suit the acoustic characteristics of the listening environment. With this in mind, we designed the NVX XEQ7, a 7-Band Stereo Equalizer that allows you to compensate for seven acoustic anomalies unique to the automotive environment. Each frequency band can be boosted or cut by up to 12dB, while a separate subwoofer volume control can boost/cut the subwoofer frequencies by 15dB. In addition to the equalization functions, the XEQ7 also features both RCA and mini-jack auxiliary inputs, allowing you to play audio from an iPod, MP3 player, DVD player, or other device. The front panel includes master volume and fader controls for easy adjustability.

XEQ7 Features:

  • 7-Band Graphic Equalizer with Dual Aux Input

Equalizer Specifications

Type of Equalizer
This determines the way the equalizer processes the signal from the source unit. A parametric equalizer allows to you adjust the center point of the frequency band you are adjusting as well the bandwidth which can be narrowed or widened. A graphic equalizer has fixed frequency bands and bandwidth and only the frequency bands can be adjusted. A digital equalizer uses a software program to tune your system.
A graphic equalizer typically has more adjustable bands and is less expensive, whereas a parametric will have fewer bands but offer a greater level of control and provide more tuning options. Digital equalizers will tune your system with the most detail and precision but require a computer and are typically a little higher in price.
Graphic
Equalizer Bands
The number of graphic or parametric equalizer bands the receiver has. The better the EQ, the more likely you will be able to "tweak" your sounds to your desire.
7 band
Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

Low-Pass (LP)
High-Pass (HP)
Line Driver
A line driver is a small amplifier used to support the strength of the audio signal coming from the source unit.
No
Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.
No
Total Number of Inputs
This is the total number of input connections that go into the unit.
2
Total Number of Outputs
This is the total number of output connections that the unit will produce.
3
Display Color
The display color refers to the color of the text and or graphics on the receiver.

Multi-Color: When more than one color is on the display, for example one part of the text is white, while the other part is blue.

Variable-Color: The display colors can be changed by the user. If the default color of text/display is blue for example, the user can change the settings to where the color turns to red. Variable color displays are typically described in detail in the item's description.

TFT-LCD Display: In-dash receivers with a video screen that display multiple colors and often times video such as DVD, navigation or other video sources.

Blue
Signal Boost/Cut
The available signal boost or cut for each of the frequency bands.
12 dB
Max Output Level
The maximum level (in volts) of signal output. A higher level will increase the clarity and boost your signal.
7 volts
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
10 - 50,000 Hz
THD (Total Harmonic Distortion)
The amount of change in harmonic content of the signal as it is amplified. A lower figure indicates less change and a more accurate amp. THD below 0.10% is inaudible.
.005%
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.
100 dB
Width
The width of the item from left to right (side-to-side) measured in inches.
7"
Height
The height of the item, measured from top to bottom, in inches.
1"
Depth
The front-to-rear depth of the item, in inches. If the item is angled or slanted, this value is the bottom measurement.

Woah, I got this as a gift, this thing rocks, control volume as well as sub volume, my amplifier had no means of controlling the incoming volume so i just had to use the tv output which sounded vary lacking in bass so movies and video games sounded bad, i couldn't just plug the games straight through because it would be at a fixed volume and VERY loud. I have it working with and amplifier now and with the volume knob, i can plug in a game console now with the raw audio and i have to say, very pleased, brought a whole new experience.

Replaced my Clarion EQS746 with this.

November 13, 2012

Holy cow. Did not think $60 could go so far in terms of audio improvement. I decided that my Clarion EQS746 had to get replaced due to no front aux in and I went for this unit in its place. Yes, I am going out from my phone headphone jack, but I am thrilled with the performance and I use this for more than just that. Anyhow, well worth the money and a huge upgrade over the Clarion which I used to consider the gold standard for half-din EQ.

Just okay...

May 7, 2014

I was not very fond of this product. It was nice and was easy to install and adjust but it did not last long. While I was sitting in a parking lot listening to my system, and my knee touched it...All I heard was a pop then I was filing an RA claim. I ended up going with a different brand...

Sounds Amazuing

July 28, 2013

I had this eq for two weeks and it sounds awesome. My kenwood HU has a 5 band equalizer but i wanted something a little better. Lets just say i found what i was looking for. My music now has better detail, clarity, and a "drop on a dime" fine tuning when i listen to different genres. The only issue i have is the whine/background noise i get with the engine off and on. Tried changing grounds, rca's, reducing gains, running separate power wire and even ran my NVX rca's over the seats away from all electrical wiring with no success..I called Sonic and NVX to help me with the issue but will be returning it for a replacement. Besides that, it is a must have for someone who is looking for improved sound quality.

Excellent EQ

April 26, 2013

It was unbelievable how good this EQ made my system sound. I have good components and thought it was just the acoustics of the car. The sound was just dull and flat. With this eq my stystem sounds like a high end system. Get this EQ, you won't be disappointed. Much better than the Kenwood or Clarion that I had. Best money I ever spent.

Pretty much DOA

April 1, 2013

I think the line driver went out on the unit; music can be heard through the speakers but it's like less than a whisper in loudness. The volume control knob will only increase static. Wasn't running it more than half volume ever, so the durability will be rated a 3 for now. I'll readjust the rating if I can after the RMA process. Also the supplied wires are a little small, making it difficult to mount somewhere convenient without additional speaker wire.

I will say that while it was working, it worked wonderfully. Installed with a tablet as a replacement head unit.

Great Design, Poor Performance

October 16, 2013

I bought this unit as an EQ and line driver after owning an AudioControl three.1. I liked the design and layout of the EQ and it sounded great. HOWEVER...I only got about 2 weeks out of the first install and after replacing it, the second one died after only 2 days. The unit was accepting input from my head unit at about 75% volume but couldn't handle and both units fried. This is the same setup I was running with the three.1 (which I am still running) and is the same instructions for installation from NVX.

The price point is excellent and the layout/settings are great, but I would NOT recommend this EQ!

After reading many different reviews of different equalizers I wasn't able to make a choice. I took a chance and ordered this eq instead of going with the clarion. Let me tell you now this eq is awesome! I have it hooked up to a kenwood kdc-138 with a crunch 1800 watt amp powering 2 infinity 1262 subwoofers. Now I have complete control of my system! And it increased my bass! Buy this eq now!

Looks great and has a nice 7 band EQ that is very convenient to use. Unfortunately the one I received just gave me a large amount of feedback through my speakers, took me hours to figure out that it was the EQ causing it rather than a poor ground or badly ran RCA's.

September 23, 2015

i bought this eq to replace my (db drive eg) i have to say for 50$ this eq is very well built and the quality seems to be great. now.. device related problems cant seem to get any signal when using the rear inputs... may be just my problem. but there is not a single drop of signal going to the amp when i use the rear inputs either 1 or 2.

other than that this is a very good EQ for those who are not looking to spend tons on a processor.

Nice EQ... Once working

July 3, 2016

I have a android based double din head unit. It has many wonderful features, sound processing is not one of them. I bought this product in hopes that I would not only be able to clean up the messy mid's in my truck, but also to have higher voltage pre-outs so that I could keep my gain sensitivity down on my amps.

So ill start with my complaints.
- The gain knobs are a pain to adjust without removing the lid(nitpicking)
- The manual is not very helpful when it comes to troubleshooting
- The unit flat out would not work with either of the RCA inputs out of the box. I used a oscilloscope to verify that the headunit was outputing a clean signal. I could plug a AUX cord into the front AUX jack and it would play music. I took the unit apart and spent a few hours trying to figure out why the RCA inputs would not work. I messed around with various fixes for a while until I saw that the trace for one of the channels on the AUX input had been cut, and bridged with a cold solder joint that had come off. Upon fixing that, the RCA's started working. Whether or not that was the source of my issue, I honestly do not know. Since then the unit has worked, it was overall a nightmare to get setup. And for that alone I'd rate it one star.

However, that said now onto the things I like about this unit.

Once I got the unit to work, after roughly 4 hours of screwing with it while half asleep, it has worked pretty well. Given the other reviews, i'd say its possible if not likely that I just got a lemon, which is why im willing to give it three stars. Overall the circuitboard looks to be solid quality, and the parts along with it. For what this product offers at the price of 45$, its a must have for any system.

It outputs a clean waveform at 6.8V, the sub and volume control are great. Knobs are firm and have little notches that let you center them at 0db. I was able to clean up frequency masking, muddiness, and underwhelming mids that were otherwise untouchable with my head unit's built in EQ.

It also looks really nice, has a premium feel to it.

Even though I have a bad taste in my mouth about this unit, I would buy another one before I totally wrote it off, if I ever needed another.

Good graphic EQ

May 23, 2016

I'm running almost exclusively Alpine in my truck except for the subs which are pioneer and this unit. Its a mediocre system with just under a thousand watts. I bought this EQ to help with the soundstage and it does a great job. I'm no pro installer by any means but after hours of trial and error, endless reading, great advice and lots of listening what I have managed to achieve has made me happy so far. This is my second unit. I may use one for the left channel and one for the right. Not sure yet. My install isn't completed to the point I want it and i know it can be better but this unit sure does help with the dips and peaks I have. With this unit disconnected the sound just isn't the same. Connected, and with most of the knobs in the minus position, it brings the Alpine speakers to...life. That's the best way I can describe it.

Nice simple eq

December 28, 2015

I purchased the NVX XEQ7 after installing an amp and component speakers because the sound I was getting was not as "full" as I needed it to be. With this eq I was easily able to tailor the sound the way I prefered. It's simple to install and make changes to the frequencies. I'm not an audiophile and build expert, but I'm very happy with this low costs purchase to make my sounds the way I want them.

I wanted an EQ with as many bands as I could get for a low price (though I didn't want one in the first place because I've gone beyond my initial budget for car audio). Reviews were relatively good and price is comparable to the Clarion unit I was considering.

In order to use input 1 and 2 on the back i have to access the top of the EQ and flip the switch? If so, i don't understand how both inputs are usable once the unit is installed. I understand there's also an input on the front that is auto. But the rear is not?
jr j on Apr 9, 2015
Best Answer: if your head unit has a ft and rear output connect both of those to the ft and rear inputs on the rear of the eq.then use both outputs on the eq to go too a four channel amp,or two one channel amps.i think the switch is for if you have only one output on your hear unit, use switch to get two outputs off eq.input on ft is for a phone or ipod.it will bypass your head unit .then you can use volume knob on eq for power.i really like mine.works well.use low pass switch on eq to get best responce and sound.i set it to 120hz and system really came to life.get and blow your doors off.good luck!

Hi I have a JVC kd-avx33 head unit.

I dont use the internal amplifier, my speakers (jbl ms-62c and jbl t696) are powered by a jbl gto1004.

I'm looking for those 1/2 din equalizer.
The internal equalizer of the head unit does the job but i'm looking for something more efficient.

Would you suggest me this equalizer i'm not totaly on a budget but i dont want to spend 200 on an equalizer?
dude d on Aug 11, 2014
Best Answer: This equalizer is exactly what you want. It's simple to set up and gets the job done. My only complain would be the knobs, but you get used to them. Don't spend 200 on an eq. The nvx is perfect. Make sure your amplifier is 4 channel so you can use all the frequencies

Does this unit ABSOLUTELY have to battery hardwired, or can it be spliced into head unit 12v battery lead?
Steve C on Oct 4, 2014
Best Answer: It wouldn't ABSOLUTELY have to be wired to battery, but if your 12v lead is too thin it may pop a fuse by running both units on the same lead. Could be unsafe if it's really thin, if it's thick you'll be fine. This equilizer also boosts the signal outputs to the amp, so I would run another lead IMO

I need the speaker wires for this with the RCA connectors on one end (to plug into unit) and wire leads on the other end to splice into my auto's speaker wires. What would you suggest? Do you carry this product?
Steve C on Nov 12, 2014
Best Answer: Steve an EQ like this requires an external amplifier. It takes signal in allows you to manipulate the signal for your external amplifier to boost for your speakers. You cannot hook it up directly to your speakers. What you seek is similar to the MS-8

It has a built in amplifier so there is no additional equipment.

will a 4 channel amp and a monoblock amp both together work with this? and can you equalize all the channels separate? for instance I don't want my tweeters playing low frequencies and my mids playing high frequencies.
Isaac T on Sep 17, 2014
Best Answer: Well it will let you adjust the frequency for 7 bands I'm running ah 4channel Amp which controls my mids and highs. I'm also running ah 2channel Amp on my subs and it works fine if installed right you will be able to turn whatever frequency dwn or up just depends on what you like!!! Hope this was some help to you!!!!!!

If my head unit (Kenwood DNX572BH) has the 3 preamps out (Front, Rear and Sub) and this only has the 2 inputs how would I go about wiring this to the whole system? Or, is this just not what I need?
John - on May 28, 2015
Best Answer: You only need to plug in the front left and right or the rear left and right. The EQ will change it to stereo. Car stereo is not like a 5.1 home stereo, it doesn't break up the sound that way. I have a sony head unit set up in my car with this EQ, on the front channels only. The Bluetooth only seems to want to go through the front speakers on my head unit. This EQ sounds real good for the money.

Hi all. I purchased the NVX XEQ7. I have a 2014 ford fusion with all stock radio. Right now I have a PAC LOC 7 running my sub from my right speaker channel and it is fantastic and loud.
I bought the NVX xeq7 so I could add another 4 channel amp to my front and rears. I took the output RCA from the LOC and ran it to the INPUT 1 on the NVX... everything hooked up perfect. The only problem is that the VOLUME OUTPUT is SUPER SUPER LOW even after increasing the output levels on the NVX XEQ7.
Can anyone help me with this and let me know why? do I have a BAD NVX? I cannot imagine it should be like this?
Just for comparison, with ONLY the LOC installed (no nvx eq) my bass level could only be turned up to 1/2 and hitting 128 db. With the nvx eq I had to turn all levels up and I can barely hear the bass.
Or can i not use an LOC running to the EQ?
PS... just to see, I did run my right speaker into the HIGH INPUT wires on the NVX and the volume was still SUPER SUPER LOW....there was just a hiss with little music coming out of the front speakers and sub output was still very low. VERY WEIRD. Or I cannot run an EQ from an LOC.
OR I have a lemon eq...

Thank you,
Scot

Best Answer: Hi Scot,

I know you said you increased the output levels on the NVX, but to be clear, are you referring to the volume knob on the front, or the outputs on the top of the unit that requires a small screw driver to access? I ask because I had a similar issue when I purchased mine. I was sure that I turned up the output volumes but I didn't. I ended up returning the first unit and once I received the replacement I had the same low volume issues. I dug a little deeper and discovered the screwdriver was a tiny bit too large and what I thought was turning was not. In other words, make 100% sure you're turning up the levels with a small enough screwdriver.

I have a 2014 f150 with my touch... can I run this after the factory amp to my 4 channel without a processor?
Gregg B on Aug 6, 2016
Best Answer: Usually with an EQ you want to run it AFTER the radio and BEFORE the amp.
As for if you need a processor, you say you have the factory amp, then YES you might need a processor or equivalent, like the LC6i or LC7. The of the LC6i and LC7 sum all the highs, mids and lows.
When you buy the oem upgraded stereo with amps from Ford, like what you have, it splits all the frequency's up. The LC6i or LC7 or processor with take all those split frequency's and SUM them into 1 full frequency and send them to the correct high, mid and sub outputs.
On Youtube, search " adding 4 channel amp to factory stereos" and " LC7 or processors".
You will find a lot of good info that explains how factory stereos split the frequency's and how the LC7/processors sums them back together. Hope this helps.

one question, it says the remote wire is a input/output, i understand what that means, but cant find a schematic for this because im wanting to wire mine a certain way, so can someone please explain like exactly what they mean you can use the remote wire for since it can be both a input and a output? thanks.
A shopper on May 28, 2016
Best Answer: Not sure why it is listed as input/output for the remote wire. This is just a standard setup. "1" always on batt. connection, one ground, one remote turn on... usually fed from the head unit's power antenna. In other words, it is an "in" of 12 volts. There is no "switch" to turn on the unit. 12 volt power on this remote lead is the switch. If you power up both the batt and remote at the same time,(tie them together) the unit may not turn on. (did this). Hook batt. to 12 volt constant supply. Then the remote wire will switch the unit on just fine.. Have had nice performance from this unit. The same wire from the head unit is usually run to the remote turn on wire of an amp.

do you to purchase additional RCA's for this ? how many would I need I run my coaxial's off my head unit and sub with a monoblock..RCA's needed ? How Many ? Thanks
Ron L on Jan 26, 2016
Best Answer: You will not need this unit if you are going to run your coax speaker off you HU. This is RCA in and RCA out. You run one set of RCA's from your HU to the EQ, then up to 3 set of RCA's from the EQ to your amplifiers. The amplifiers will then power your speakers.

were is the wiring diagram for the high input harness ?
A shopper on May 13, 2015
Best Answer: It's on the top right hand corner of the unit. You just splice into the factory front or rear speaker wires and the black wire is grounded to the car's chassis.

Hi all...A customer asked me a question via my email. I tried to answer but the link to answer would not work so I am answering through here instead.
Question was "I have a 2014 f150 with my touch... can I run this after the factory amp to my 4 channel without a processor?"
Did you mean after your factory "radio" to your 4 channel amp?
I wish you gave more info, because I do not know if you have factory or upgraded stereo with amps, but I will try to help.
Answer 1) Usually with an EQ you want to run it AFTER radio and BEFORE the amp because the EQ has all the outputs for your amps.
2) as for needing a processor, and you are running the EQ after the radio and before the amp, I am not 100% sure... but I do not think you need a processor if you no split frequency's. (highs from 1 amp, mids from another amp and bass from another amp).
3) Are connecting to the low inputs or the high inputs on the EQ?
4) if your original question is correct ...."I have a 2014 f150 with my touch... can I run this after the factory amp to my 4 channel without a processor?" I am wondering why you want to run an EQ between 2 amps? That is why I asked if you meant AFTER the oem radio?
If correct, then YES you may need a processor to sum all your highs, mids and bass frequency's into 1 or 2 full frequency outputs. Something like the LC6i or LC7 or equivalent will be needed to sum everything back together when ford split all the highs, mids and bass.
Sorry for the huge paragraph, just trying to answer to the fullest. Hope this helps.
