Subwoofer Specifications

Subwoofer Series
Each subwoofer manufactured is part of a series. This is the name of the subwoofer's series.
HCCA (Orion)
Subwoofer Size
Refers to the diameter of the subwoofer, measured in inches.
10"
Peak Power Handling
Peak power handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle during a brief musical burst. The RMS power range figure is a much more reliable rating for determining the speaker's power requirements. The Peak power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
3000 watts
RMS Power Handling
The RMS power is the amount of power the speaker requires to operate safely and properly. RMS Power Handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle on a continuous basis. We recommend powering your speakers or subwoofer with 80%-120% of its recommended RMS rating. The RMS power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
1500 watts
Voice Coil(s)
Dual voice coil subs have more wiring flexibility than single voice coils subs; however, single voice coil subwoofers provide easier hookup options for wiring multiple subwoofers in parallel or series. You may also run a dual voice coil (DVC) sub in parallel, series, or combination. A quad voice coil has four voice coils and is equal to two dual voice coil subwoofers as far as wiring goes.
Dual
Impedance (Per Voice Coil)
The load value (in ohms) that the speakers present to the amplifier per voice coil - the amount of resistance to the current flow. This is a key specification as subs wired in parallel or low impedances can create problems with your amplifier and potentially void all warranties. We encourage you to ask our support department prior to purchase if you do not understand which impedance level will suit your application best.
4 ohms
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
33 - 100 Hz
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
84 dB
Xmax (millimeters)
Typically measured in millimeters, the Xmax value is the measure of a speaker cone's maximum excursion in one direction while maintaining a linear behavior.
25.89 mm
Subwoofer Design
This is the design of the subwoofer or the opening of the subwoofer enclosure. Each design has it's own benefits, whether it is a square, circle, or oval.

Round/Circle: This is the typical and common subwoofer design. They have a round cone and are a circle in design.

Square: These woofers are able to achieve a greater cone area in a smaller space. Because of the greater surface area, some square subwoofers will be louder than a round subwoofer of the same size.

Round / Circle
Main Cone Color
This is the color of the speaker's or subwoofer's cone.
Black
Woofer Composition
Lightweight woofer cone materials are essential for efficient operation. Poly cones produce exceptional sound and are sturdy against various changes in temperature. Paper cones are very efficient, and when treated for moisture resistance, will perform at a high level. Poly refers to polypropylene, which is thermoplastic or fibers that are polymers of propylene. IMPP refers to injection molded polypropylene, a commonly used process and material in speakers.
Polypropylene
Woofer Surround
A speakers surround is part of the suspension system. The surround protects the cone and prevents it from being displaced as it flexes out from the basket. It is usually made of a durable material like treated foam or rubber in order to withstand the strenuous job of producing bass frequencies.
Tri-Radius Symmetrical
Subwoofer Grille
Most subwoofers are able to accommodate a universal grille; however, some subs include a grille and others have a specific, optional grille available for purchase separately. If "yes", then the subwoofer includes a grille. If "optional (sold separately)" the matching grille will need to be purchased in addition to the sub.
No
Re-Cone Kit Available
Some higher end subwoofers have replaceable cone assemblies. In case of a blown woofer, a recone kit allows for a simple replacement, as opposed to purchasing an entire new subwoofer.
Yes (Accessory available and sold separately)

Recommended Enclosure Specifications

Recommended Enclosure Type
This is the recommended type of enclosure that the subwoofer should be installed into. Some subwoofers are specially designed for particular enclosures.

Sealed: These enclosures completely enclose the air inside the box. These boxes produce a tight bass.

Ported/Vented: These enclosures have a slot of air to escape from the box. The result is a sound that has more "boom".

Bandpass: These are a combination of both sealed and ported enclosures. They can be very efficient, but require tuning for the best response.

Ported / Vented
Sealed
Optimum Sealed Box Volume
This value indicates the ideal sealed box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
.90 cubic feet
Optimum Ported Box Volume
This value indicates the ideal ported box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
.75 cubic feet
Top-Mount Depth
The depth when installed on top of the mounting surface. Measured from the bottom of the speaker's magnet to the bottom of the mounting holes on the rim of the speaker.
8.425"
Cutout Diameter
The actual diameter of the hole you will need to cut out if you are creating a new mounting location for this speaker, or if you are mounting a subwoofer in a box.
9.37"
Shallow Mount Installation
This means that the subwoofer/speaker is designed to be installed in areas that do not have a lot of space. Shallow mount subwoofers are typically found under a seat or behind the seat in some trucks.

Shallow mount speakers will typically have a mounting depth of 2" or less, while shallow mount subwoofers will typically have a mounting depth of 3" or less.

No

Electromechanical Parameters

Free-Air Resonance (Fs)
The free-air resonance frequency of the subwoofer, measured in Hz. At this frequency the weight of the moving parts is perfectly balanced with the subwoofers suspension system.
44.3 Hz
Equivalent Compliance (Vas)
This is the amount of air that has the same stiffness as the subwoofers suspension. The greater the rating, the lower the stiffness and larger recommended enclosure. It is measured in Liters.
.32 liters
Total Speaker Q Value (Qts)
This is the subwoofers relative damping (Q) at the resonance frequency (Fs), including all dimensionless losses. Essentially, a high Qts value (closer to 1.0) means the subwoofer is great for sealed enclosures and a low Qts value (closer to 0) means the woofer is great in vented enclosures. A Qts of around 0.45 means the woofer will work decently in either enclosure type.
.48
Electrical Q Value (Qes)
The subwoofers relative damping (Q) at the resonance frequency (Fs), including electrical losses. Also called the mechanical damping of the subwoofer. The unitless measurement usually varies from 0.5 – 10.
.52
Electrical Resistance of Voice Coil (Re)
Amount of DC resistance of the subwoofer when measured with an ohm meter. Typically, this will read less than the impedance rating of the subwoofer.
7.4 ohms
Mechanical Q Value (Qms)
This is the subwoofers relative damping (Q) at the resonance frequency (Fs), including mechanical losses. Also called the mechanical damping of the subwoofer. This unitless measurement usually varies from 0.5 – 10.

Nuts!

December 1, 2009

I did my research and i always came back to the Orion, very happy i chose to purchase it. I have kids come up to me everyday at school asking how many 15's i had and i say a single 10 and they never believe me. Im only running about 600rms to it also (yes i know that is not nearly enough). Very worth the money, i suggest saving up your money and getting this over anything else in this price range, except for the mtx 9500 thats the only sub ive been told can beat mine, granted i only have 600rms to it. Im gonna sell this one and get the 15 soon, im in love.

*Admin Note: Under powering a woofer is dangerous, the voice coil could warp and cause serious damage.*

Breaking in subs

August 6, 2014

Bryan the reason your Orion HCCA sub blew was the fact that you were only running 350watts to it! Subs will normally blow up because of one or two reasons. Not ENOUGH POWER, even at break in, or a very distorted signal. Your sub is a dual 4 ohm sub so you had to be running it at either 8 or 2 ohms. The third way to pop a sub can be the box set up. I'm running 8 12" HCCA's with four fosgate 2500bdcp's. Keep it in mind. Hope I helped. Currently hitting 167.7db

they need power!

October 29, 2012

When i bought this sub i also bought an Orion HCCA D1200 amp and built a 1 cube sealed box, this sounded good but not loud. I then ported my box with 3 inch pvc to 28hz, this made it much louder but not good enough. I then bought a sundown d1500, this made the most improvement out of all the upgrades but introduced port whistle at high volume. My box is now ported with 4 inch pvc at 27hz and will flex the crap out of the back of my truck.

Amazing sub! POWER HOUSE!

March 22, 2010

I bought two of these bad boys in September of '09 and they still set off car alarms! I had to tune my amp 1/4 up for the first three weeks to break them in. After i brought it to the shop, and had the amp re-tuned and OMGG i thought i was gonna go deaf. NO ONE at my school, can even step up to my level, these things knock so hard!!!

The only thing is, you should take your time in buying your amp, because you need a mighty powerful one to power these. I'd say an amp with at least 2500 rms @ 2 ohms because these subs can be wired at any ohm level out there. And you'll probably need a custom box. And don't try to install these yourself, unless you really know what your doing. They'll blow in a second if not installed properly.

If you want your truck knockin' buy one, if you're a bass fanatic buy two! I promise you, you've heard nothing like it. It'll kick the a** of almost every 10' and 12' subs out there. HANDS DOWN! Plus the subs look pretty cool. :D

What a beast

October 6, 2010

This sub is a monster. Its still in a sealed box but the sound is amazing, deep smooth bass. Plan on a getting another, wiring to 2ohm and building a ported box soon. Consider a high quality 2000w+ mono amp to actually push this thing to its potential. Everyone's jealous my little 10 sounds 100x better then their 12's and 15's, with the right amp and box it can be louder than most, but either way the sound quality is superb, actual DEEP bass you feel and can appreciate. Id love to get a 12 or a 15 once Im done with the 10.

This is a serious piece of machinery and very power hungry. If you don't have an amp capable of pushing 1500W RMS you can't run this sub properly. It will get big SPL but I felt the sound quality was sacrificed. If you are looking for a serious high power sub with SQ try the Alpine Type X.

OMFG!

September 6, 2011

Dam this Orion HCCA is by fair the best subwoofer i have ever own. This has some amazing, deep smooth bass. Also this sub broke my windshield with in the first week. If you own one i must say get a custom box for this it won't disappoint you at all. Im also running it at 4ohms with one big amp and a cap cell so i won't get dimming.

P.S. It worth every penny.

GREAT SUBS

May 23, 2012

I steped down from a pair of 12's to these lil bad boys and I'm glad I did, I got 2 of these runnin off a Rockford BD2500.1cp and they're not even broken in yet and they pound hard. They need power and a good box to sound good my RF is rated at 3,200 at 1ohm and these subs love it, also I have them in a custom box, not a generic box with two 10 inch holes in it.

Great Price for Great Sound

December 8, 2012

I've had this sub in a cheap $30 box until my custom box is done being built. Running about 350rms to it and going on 20hrs in the past 2 days. Hooking up 1500w rms RF on monday after i put another 20hrs on sub. Sounds good and is dramatically getting louder every other hour. The volume started at 20 and is now down to 15 because it starts rattling my single-cab yota so bad. Hits the low notes smooth and crisp even though not loud but still satisfies with those higher end bass notes. Can't wait till monday to push this thing!

ridiculously awesome subs

February 27, 2012

I got two of these only running 1100 rms to each and ive never felt bass like this. You can feel it deep in your chest i can only turn it up high for a few minutes. You can litterally feel the pressure the bass puts on your ears. If your looking to compete and have the best system around buy them dont hold back, their so worth the money, definitely reccommend these over any others. Just make sure you get great highs i got the infinity kappa 62.9is in all my doors with a 1000 watt amp pushin them. They are crystal clear LOUD. My tahoe sounds ridiculous.

This sub is very high quality, would recommend to anyone provided they have the power to run it. I have a power acoustic 6000 mono powering one, I could use another one but this sub is power hungry!! Make sure you have a good power system for this baby! Very nice crisp middle and high bass, won't have deep bass until it's broken in. I highly recomend it for the person who has little space but wants high quality bass.

Highly recomend this subwoofer. I own 1 of them in a ported box and the things hits hard i have it running off a hifonics brz2400.1d at 2 ohms and honestly its comparable to like 2 12's. I hear people say that a downside to it is that you need alot of power to run it etc... but what can you expect its underrated at 1500 rms if your gonna complain about having to buy a powerful amp buy a different speaker. They say it has to be mounted facing up i have mine facing towards the trunk and i havent seen any problems. Im about to get a second one for tremendous slap!

MONSTER SUBS!!!

December 15, 2011

SUBS: 2 Orions HCCA 10.4s

Car: 91' Z-24
Radio: Kenwood KDC-HD942u
Amp: Memphis Mojo MC-4000d
Line driver: Phoenix Gold 8v
Electrical: 1 Excessive Amperage 200a alt.; 1 g34 battery up front and 2 C&D 139ah batts in the trunk.
Wiring: 2 runs of Shok Industries 0 ga. power wire; Monster RCA's
Deadener: Raammat (out of Utah)

What does all this mean? AMAZING SUBS!!!! It shakes my dash as if there was a gorrila in it trying to get out.

If you're NOT looking to "compete" and just want to show your buddies what a MONSTER sub can do, these Orions are MONSTERS!!

They're NO a joke you guys. You MUST MUST MUST upgrade your electrical system so that you can have an amp that will actually push these subs.

One downside. One of my subs has started to crack a bit on the foam surround after about a year of MODERATE use. I only beat on them for MAYBE 5-10 minute intervals. Luckily these subs are easily fixed for a reasonable cost.

But even giving 350 rms It still sets off car alarms and shakes the elders in there cars.

How would one of these compare to two JL Audio 10W3v3-4? (all in a sealed enclosure for better response)

Everything would hypothetically be powered by a Hifonics Hercules 4K amp. I'm wondering which will have the best sound. The JL has a lower response rate but then this orion just takes so much power. Thanks

would a orion cobalt 2400 be enough to push one of these subs?i plan on getting 2 hcca 10s but also 2 orion 2400s if its enough power.oh i have 0 gauge wire capacitors and blockshaker batteries in between the main battery and my amp would that be sufficient to power both cobalt amps?
A shopper on Aug 26, 2014
Best Answer: Hello,

The Orion CO2400.1D2 would be an 'ok' match for one HCCA104, but far from a 'good' or 'best' choice. Based on the specs provided, its unlikely the amp is going to get anywhere above its given rating of 1200w RMS @ 2ohms. This is clearly 'enough to push one of these subs', but with the HCCA104 asking for 1500w RMS, you will be underpowering by quite a bit. Your best options are: Two of the power hungry Hifonics X2200.1D or Belva BB5000D . OR just ONE Proper 3k Amp, like the NVX XPLD3K.

A pair of these will absolutely handle the power of that amp. As a matter of fact, you may want to consider Upgrading from that amp, as it will not put out the rated power without a very high stable voltage. At typical voltage levels, you may only be getting ~1200w RMS @ 1ohm .

Below is an example of a proper 3k amplifier, and what most of our customers are matching with a pair of HCCA104.

Best Answer: Hello Grege,

You are in a bit of a strange predicament here. One HCCA104 would be a perfect match for that amp, but you won't be getting the "Full Power", although it will be the Full Power at its 2ohm rating. Assuming you wish to wire down to 1ohm to get the 2k watts, then you Must run Two but then you will be Underpowering both subs by 500w. If you are flexible in terms of the Size, then ONE Orion HCCA122 will be your best approach.

To be fair, ONE HCCA104 @ 2ohms will be a BEAUTIFUL match.
