Speaker Specifications

Series
This is the manufacturer product line of speakers.
CTX (Image Dynamics)
Priced Per
Car Speakers are typically sold in pairs so you will receive 2 speakers for each speaker purchase on speakers marked "Priced Per Pair". If a speaker is marked "Priced Per Each" then the speaker is sold individually and each purchase you make will result in 1 speaker. High-powered tweeters, midrange and full-range pro audio for car speakers are typically sold per each speaker.
Pair
Speaker Size
Refers to the size of the speaker measured in inches. Every vehicle has standard application sizes. Please use our vehicle fitment guide for your vehicle's specific speaker sizes if you do not know them.
6-1/2"
Design
The number of individual drivers in a car speaker. Speakers with 2 drivers are known as a 2-way, and 3 drivers are known as a 3-way. Component systems are often referred to as "separates" because the tweeter is not attached to the midwoofer (main speaker driver) and mounts separately in a location such as a door post. Component systems typically come with an external crossover so you can easily adjust the high and low frequencies sent to both the midwoofer and the tweeter. Center channel speakers are great for those looking to have surround sound in their vehicle.
2-way Component System
Tweeter Design
Designs such as cone, dome, semi-dome, balanced dome, and whizzer are most popular. Cone tweeters are simple, efficient and typically are the most reasonably priced. Dome tweeters are used in most home speakers, and provide a smoother and more accurate sound. Semi-dome design is one with a dome placed inside a cone. A Balanced dome driver is a semi-dome with equal reproduction area given the cone and dome portions of the driver. A whizzer tweeter is a separate tweeter cone driven by the voice coil of the woofer.
Dome
Tweeter Composition
Materials such as polypropylene, silk, cloth, and paper are the most common, where as many more recent tweeters are now manufactured with composites such as Aluminum, Titanium, Mylar, and other materials.

PEI is an acronym for "Polyetherimide" which is an amorphous, amber transparent, high-performance thermoplastic.

Silk
Woofer Composition
Lightweight woofer cone materials are essential for efficient operation. Poly cones produce exceptional sound and are sturdy against various changes in temperature. Paper cones are very efficient, and when treated for moisture resistance, will perform at a high level. Poly refers to polypropylene, which is thermoplastic or fibers that are polymers of propylene. IMPP refers to injection molded polypropylene, a commonly used process and material in speakers.
Poly-Mica
Woofer Surround
A speakers surround is part of the suspension system. The surround protects the cone and prevents it from being displaced as it flexes out from the basket. It is usually made of a durable material like treated foam or rubber in order to withstand the strenuous job of producing bass frequencies.
Butyl Rubber
Peak Power Handling
Peak power handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle during a brief musical burst. The RMS power range figure is a much more reliable rating for determining the speaker's power requirements. The Peak power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
200 watts
RMS Power Handling
The RMS power is the amount of power the speaker requires to operate safely and properly. RMS Power Handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle on a continuous basis. We recommend powering your speakers or subwoofer with 80%-120% of its recommended RMS rating. The RMS power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
100 watts
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
89 dB
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
55 - 25,000 Hz
Impedance (Per Voice Coil)
The load value (in ohms) that the speakers present to the amplifier per voice coil - the amount of resistance to the current flow. This is a key specification as subs wired in parallel or low impedances can create problems with your amplifier and potentially void all warranties. We encourage you to ask our support department prior to purchase if you do not understand which impedance level will suit your application best.
4 ohms
Shallow Mount Installation
This means that the subwoofer/speaker is designed to be installed in areas that do not have a lot of space. Shallow mount subwoofers are typically found under a seat or behind the seat in some trucks.

Shallow mount speakers will typically have a mounting depth of 2" or less, while shallow mount subwoofers will typically have a mounting depth of 3" or less.

No
Top-Mount Depth
The depth when installed on top of the mounting surface. Measured from the bottom of the speaker's magnet to the bottom of the mounting holes on the rim of the speaker.
2-3/4"
Bottom-Mount Depth
The depth when installed from the bottom of the mounting surface. Measured from the bottom of the speaker's magnet to the top of the mounting holes on the rim of the speaker.
2-7/8"
Cutout Dimensions
Refers to the dimensions of the hole, measured in inches or millimeters, required to contain the speaker.
5-5/8" x 5-5/8"
Speaker Grilles
A grating or screen of metal or plastic bars or wires, mounted in front of a speaker as protection. If yes, the speakers will include matching speaker grilles. If no, there are no grilles included.

Very Nice Speakers

December 11, 2013

I bought these about three weeks ago along with some Image Dynamics CTX-4 coax speakers and let me tell you that they sound amazing. It took about a week at 80hz for them to break in but after that all I have is sonic bliss. If you are looking for a great set of comps up front and a matching set of coax's in the rear, you would be hard pressed to find a better set for the money. Thanks Sonic for getting me the lowest price.

great speakers

October 2, 2013

I purchased these speakers about a month ago for a product change(mb quart, boston acoustic, and I will say these are by far cleaner and more crisp without being harsh. Its all in the setup (tweeter angles and proper mounting-solid- that makes or brakes any speaker setup) try mounting your subs in a cardboard box and check clarity. pros- clean clear crisp detailed tweeters (slightly bright without the metal dome tweeter ring) does not require a lot of power to get to a reasonable level. I have 300 watts feeding a ID12 V.3 D4 and 50 watts feeding the CTX65CS components and the highs are even with the bass. Changing that amp to 75x2 for more headroom this weekend when I get time. cons- don't really have any that I can find If you are on a budget and want really nice clear sound I would say get a set of these components and mount them correctly with at least 75 watts rms clean power and enjoy.

clear sound

September 18, 2013

I'm very happy with the sound quality. Vocals and instruments are clear and never distorted at any volume. Do not expect a lot of bass from these speakers. You will need a sub to give any kind of quality bass, how much bass you want is purely a personal taste. I have these speakers connected to an alpine pdx f4 amp,HU is a Sony xav 701 hd (great sound quality and screen but nothing else!!! Its the only reason why I dont rip it out) and bass comes from a kicker hideaway. Great surround sound!

Pleased & Surprised

September 18, 2012

I kind of went out on a limb ordering these (came in a combo package with CTX-6.5 the ID12 D4 and the RE Audio XTX-500.5) I had never heard of Image Dynamics until I had shopped around for a new system for my 04 Trailblazer. I am by no means an audiophile, but I know what sounds good. You can definitely push things things without worrying. I was extremely pleased with this component set. The clarity of this set is spectacular. The tweeters can be kind of harsh, especially if you leave the crossover at it's default level. I took care of most of it through my head unit(the crossover case is really hard to open once mounted). The woofers are also great. They have a pretty tight punch to them, even at fairly low listening levels (of course it depends on what you're listening to). I still have some tweaking to do on my stereo to get it just right, but overall the frequency response is impressive. I don't know how good the real low end of these are, because I rely more on my sub to take care of that. What I do know is my system is one of the best I've personally heard in a car thank in part to these. They are loud, bright and clear.

Awesome..

June 27, 2012

Overall great speakers!! Very nice and clean SQL !! Mid bass is nice and tight, but not to much of thump. The tweeters are "bright" but can be turned down. Clarity is not an issue with these speakers.. Great CS for the price as well !!

Well worth the money

June 25, 2012

These thinks absolutely kick. Hard unbelievable value for the money. Used to own Infiniti kappas and these thing blow them completely out of the water. Voice seperation is great with these. Even better is they can be driven by crappy stock head unit power. I wouldn't recommend that, but I have done that and they still sound great

Great but midbass is lacking.

June 14, 2012

These are really great comps. My only gripe with them is they don't have as much midbass as I'd like. I'm not expecting these to sound like a subwoofer, but bass guitar and kick drum just seem to be severely lacking. They blend in great with a subwoofer though. Imaging is wonderful. The tweeters are a bit bright. I have them on -3 setting, my input may be biased due to the fact that it's been a while since I've had tweets in my car, but over time, my ears adapted and the tweeters became softer. Overall, they are really great comps. Plenty of volume, and they sound really clean too!

Good Speakers

March 30, 2012

I bought this product from sonic electronix about 6 months ago and put them in the factory locations of my Honda Fit. I use an Eclipse CD5030 to control them and have them powered with 2 channels of a older RF amp. I went to these from a pair of Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1's and the difference is night and day. The midbass is ok, but not as great as I expected even with in and out sealed doors, but I got them for the tweets and those sound great to my ears. They seem to take power very well and I haven't been able to crank them up to hear distortion without first reaching my own limit. My only complaint is the size of the basket is waaay bigger than I planned on. I like how beefy it feels (almost like a small sub) but it absolutely would not fit in my doors without spacers. And by that I mean a lot of space-rs. Had to find that sweet spot that would give clearance through the opening without hitting the back of my door covers! I would definitely recommend these to anybody looking for great sound at an affordable price. Sonix price was amazing and they arrived in perfect condition.

Good for the money

January 21, 2012

The mid bass on this system is pretty good right out of the box. The tweeters are very harsh ran through the passive xover that comes with them (even on the -3db setting). Originally I had 2 sets running off a Fosgate T1000-4 with one set per channel. I changed my setup to run both sets active through a Cache cex on the same amp and it made a world of difference. The highs became more crisp instead of harsh and the mid range seemed to push through better. I highly recommend these, but ditch the passive xovers that come with them and get a good active xover or an amp capable of running active.
