Subwoofer Specifications

Subwoofer Series
Each subwoofer manufactured is part of a series. This is the name of the subwoofer's series.
Type-R (Alpine)
Subwoofer Size
Refers to the diameter of the subwoofer, measured in inches.
12"
Peak Power Handling
Peak power handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle during a brief musical burst. The RMS power range figure is a much more reliable rating for determining the speaker's power requirements. The Peak power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
3000 watts
RMS Power Handling
The RMS power is the amount of power the speaker requires to operate safely and properly. RMS Power Handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle on a continuous basis. We recommend powering your speakers or subwoofer with 80%-120% of its recommended RMS rating. The RMS power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
1000 watts
Voice Coil(s)
Dual voice coil subs have more wiring flexibility than single voice coils subs; however, single voice coil subwoofers provide easier hookup options for wiring multiple subwoofers in parallel or series. You may also run a dual voice coil (DVC) sub in parallel, series, or combination. A quad voice coil has four voice coils and is equal to two dual voice coil subwoofers as far as wiring goes.
Dual
Impedance (Per Voice Coil)
The load value (in ohms) that the speakers present to the amplifier per voice coil - the amount of resistance to the current flow. This is a key specification as subs wired in parallel or low impedances can create problems with your amplifier and potentially void all warranties. We encourage you to ask our support department prior to purchase if you do not understand which impedance level will suit your application best.
4 ohms
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
24 - 200 Hz
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
85 dB
Xmax (millimeters)
Typically measured in millimeters, the Xmax value is the measure of a speaker cone's maximum excursion in one direction while maintaining a linear behavior.
20 mm
Subwoofer Design
This is the design of the subwoofer or the opening of the subwoofer enclosure. Each design has it's own benefits, whether it is a square, circle, or oval.

Round/Circle: This is the typical and common subwoofer design. They have a round cone and are a circle in design.

Square: These woofers are able to achieve a greater cone area in a smaller space. Because of the greater surface area, some square subwoofers will be louder than a round subwoofer of the same size.

Round / Circle
Main Cone Color
This is the color of the speaker's or subwoofer's cone.
Dark Gray
Woofer Composition
Lightweight woofer cone materials are essential for efficient operation. Poly cones produce exceptional sound and are sturdy against various changes in temperature. Paper cones are very efficient, and when treated for moisture resistance, will perform at a high level. Poly refers to polypropylene, which is thermoplastic or fibers that are polymers of propylene. IMPP refers to injection molded polypropylene, a commonly used process and material in speakers.
Kevlar Fiber
Woofer Surround
A speakers surround is part of the suspension system. The surround protects the cone and prevents it from being displaced as it flexes out from the basket. It is usually made of a durable material like treated foam or rubber in order to withstand the strenuous job of producing bass frequencies.
Santoprene Rubber
Subwoofer Grille
Most subwoofers are able to accommodate a universal grille; however, some subs include a grille and others have a specific, optional grille available for purchase separately. If "yes", then the subwoofer includes a grille. If "optional (sold separately)" the matching grille will need to be purchased in addition to the sub.
Optional (Accessory required and sold separately)
Re-Cone Kit Available
Some higher end subwoofers have replaceable cone assemblies. In case of a blown woofer, a recone kit allows for a simple replacement, as opposed to purchasing an entire new subwoofer.
No

Recommended Enclosure Specifications

Recommended Enclosure Type
This is the recommended type of enclosure that the subwoofer should be installed into. Some subwoofers are specially designed for particular enclosures.

Sealed: These enclosures completely enclose the air inside the box. These boxes produce a tight bass.

Ported/Vented: These enclosures have a slot of air to escape from the box. The result is a sound that has more "boom".

Bandpass: These are a combination of both sealed and ported enclosures. They can be very efficient, but require tuning for the best response.

Ported / Vented
Sealed
Minimum Sealed Box Volume
This value indicates the minimum sealed box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
0.65 cubic feet
Maximum Sealed Box Volume
This value indicates the maximum sealed box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
1.25 cubic feet
Minimum Ported Box Volume
This value indicates the minimum ported box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
1.0 cubic feet
Maximum Ported Box Volume
This value indicates the maximum ported box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
2.0 cubic feet
Top-Mount Depth
The depth when installed on top of the mounting surface. Measured from the bottom of the speaker's magnet to the bottom of the mounting holes on the rim of the speaker.
6-3/8"
Cutout Diameter
The actual diameter of the hole you will need to cut out if you are creating a new mounting location for this speaker, or if you are mounting a subwoofer in a box.
10-13/16"
Shallow Mount Installation
This means that the subwoofer/speaker is designed to be installed in areas that do not have a lot of space. Shallow mount subwoofers are typically found under a seat or behind the seat in some trucks.

Shallow mount speakers will typically have a mounting depth of 2" or less, while shallow mount subwoofers will typically have a mounting depth of 3" or less.

Sub Gone Bad

September 12, 2013

Purchased this sub about 6 months ago and installed it in a ported box and it sounded great until the cone came unglued and now I am having to have it repaired. I am hoping after the repairs are complete it will sound as good as it did the first 6 months and that it will last a lot longer this time.

Great sub, so-so in reliability

May 16, 2014

I have been an Alpine fan in general since the mid to late 80s. I have always relied upon a great head unit, amps, and even subs. This sub is no exception. However, here's my take on the matter. The sound quality itself is really good. Toanlly accurate, tight, deep bass in my sealed box. Power handling is exceptional as well (hitting 2 units with about 700w RMS RF power). Not bad at all. However, recently the cone has separated from the surround from daily use. I do not compete, and I don't listen at compettition levels. I listen at moderate levels only. When a sub recently blew, I thought it was the voice coil. But in this case it was not that. I think Alpine quality has been slowly dgrading over time. Still a GOOD product / good value for the money. But there are better subs out there, you just need to do your homework. As always, you get what you pay for. I am in the process now of having the defective sub replaced. Sonic has been really good overall since my first purchase years back. I love them overall and will continue to do business with them.

Don't be fooled

March 30, 2014

Alpine say's that this sub will run 1000 watts. Don't be fooled I Bought one and blew and 3 months after the break in period I blew a voice coil. I had it hooked up to a JL Audio 1000/1 V2 slash series amp. The sub is worth the money if you're not gonna run 1000 watts to it but if you are you might want to go with the type x.

The subs showed up on time and in new condition. Hooked them up and put them in a prefab box and could only do 130db berore clipping...the subs will not take 1000 watts rms...I'd say 600..taking them out and putting in 2 sundown x 12s

September 20, 2013

I had this woofer for about 9 months and had the same problem as another reviewer. The cone came unglued from the surround and fortunately sonic let me get a store credit so i could get another woofer. I loved the woofer until it unglued but i just got a RE SEX in the same box and it bumps!

Nice Sub

July 1, 2014

I have a single 12 dual 4 ohms pulling 2 ohms from a Alpine M110. It sounds nice but the amp is just a little to powerful for it, I have to keep all the levels down in order not to damage the speaker. I'm thinking about changing up and maybe getting two subs just to be able to get the most power out of everything.

the hardest hitting subs ive owned

May 16, 2014

I have had dual Rockford fosgate p3 12s and dual hifonics Brutus sq 12s and neither compare to these sub's. You can not beat the price and quality of sub's. Must buy!!!!!! Only issue for me is the extra rubber that hides screw's. It would stay on so I didn't use it but they still look and sound beautiful in ground shaker bandpass box.

Alpine type R

February 11, 2014

This is a great subwoofer, for 159$ this and the RE audio line, are the best for the price. I chose alpine however for the significant power boost. Just so you guys know you really don't have to worry about power, just watch your gains. I'm giving mine 1200 rms and it takes it like a beast. Highly recommend this in a sealed box for rock, and really it gets to a great volume in a sealed, but ported for sure if you're into volume and you will only need one of these.

Awesome

February 3, 2014

I will go ahead and mention, I am definitely an Alpine guy, so I am biased. I have several of their products and I love all of them, which is why I decided to go with this subwoofer in the first place. I have never had a problem with Alpine. I had an older Alpine Type E before I bought the Type R, and there is a big difference between the two. It is much louder and you definitely feel it more. It vibrates everything in the car. And I only have one. Two of these would be crazy. I am running it off the Rockford Fosgate R500X1D amp, which powers it very well. I put the Type R in the same ported box I used the Type E in, which isn't a even a good box, but I'm planning to get a proper enclosure built to the correct specs soon, so I'm sure that will make it sound even better. I can't really speak about the durability yet, but based on my prior experience with Alpine, I have no doubts this sub is made well and will last a long time. It weights almost 30 pounds! This sub sounds great, looks great, and you really can't go wrong with Alpine. Buy it!

No complaints.

December 2, 2013

A friend of mine recommended these to me because I was looking for tons of power without a huge hit to sound quality. So bought one, it hit so hard, and sounded so good i bought another! My Only complaint is the way you have to put the speaker wire into the sub i found it quite hard to get the wire to stay in place. Really this sub is just a great mix of power, sound quality, and price! As long as its from sonic other websites this sub was $279 bucks!

hi there i have 2 alpine mrp m500 can use it on this one sub single 12 sealed subwoofer box ? thanks bud
A shopper on Aug 17, 2014
Best Answer: Yes, however the sub pry will not require that much power. I run to 10d4s in my truck in a sealed box at 1200 watts between the two of them and its more than enough power. I also run the same set up with 2 12D4s in my ford edge in a labrynth ported box with the prime series 1200 watt fosgate and it hits hard as hell. I would try just the single 500 m class fist yhendecide from thrre

what would be the best amp for a set of swr-12d4 subs?
scott on Sep 1, 2014
Best Answer: I'm not 100% sure, but I have a 1000/1 jl mono block and it plays pretty good. No issues or blown subs yet. I'd stick with any amp that is 1000 watts or more just to be safe and have a little extra power incase you upgrade later. Don't get a amp with not enough power and cause distortion because of the amp not strong. I have those same exact subs and I know they say they can play 1k watts but I think for these speakers, it can't handle that power, I believe they're 600 watts rms, so a amp that has maybe 1200 watts or plus will treat you good. Hope this helps

hi there i have 2 apine mrp m500 can use it on this sub? thanks bud
A shopper on Aug 17, 2014
Best Answer: Hello,

We highly suggest only using ONE MRP-M500 on ONE SWR-12D4. You will be getting the 2 ohm rating of 500W x 1 , which everyone knows is an underrated figure. Assuming that, you will be Very happy with the performance.

i am just about to buy 2 swr-12d4 alpine and 2 Planet Audio AC3000.1, i am wondering if one of the amplifiers is as master and 1 as slave can I used them at 1omh with the subwoofers? thanks!!
benjamin on Aug 1, 2014
Best Answer: Hello Benjamin,

The BRX2400 is a traditional MONOBLOCK, that just happens to have an extra output for situations Just like this. You will simply wire EACH SWR-12D4 in Parallel, to a 2ohm final Load, then give EACH one its own channel. The amp will then bring the connections together INTERNALLY, and bring the impedance down to 1ohm.
If this is too confusing, then simply use ONE Positive and ONE Negative, and treat it as a traditional amp. Neither way is better than the other!!
Also, we highly recommend NOT going with the 2400 RMS model. That is waay to much power for these subs. 1000w RMS to each - despite what the manufacture's claims are - is also pushing the extreme but more tolerable.
