Would not buy for several reasons

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

If you have an amp that pushes a true RMS of over 800 i would strongly recommend buying a different sub. 800 RMS or less for the money this is a great sub though..... I had this Sub for 1 day on a PPI 1000.1 amp.. it sounded great until i turned it up to negative 12 on my pioneer deck... Toast!! ... Waiting to hear from the warranty department in store credit I'll keep you posted!......

All i can say about this sub, it hits HARD. If you are debating this sub or another one, this is the one. The right box with 1100 watts just pounds.

Alpine type R is a beast!!!

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

The type r has the cleanest bass I've ever heard. I had a kicker cvr before and this blows it away with same amp I had. Went with a sealed box because I don't really listen to rap and perfer sq. I recomend this to anyone who want the best bang for their buck!!

Pounders

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

Awesome speakers! These things pound and are often compared to rockford P3's but these are better in my opinion. Started off with three and added another one so now I have 4 of these. My power drill went through the cone of one of my subs and sonic electronix said there was no warranty against that but other than that these things slam.

Great sub for the price

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

I'm running this sub with a 500W class D mono block amp in a ported box and it sounds great. It hits harder than i expected. For the price i recommend the Type R to anyone that wants good boom for under $200

Alpine!

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

i've only had alpine subs and they have never let me down, i have 2 of these and they go hard even under powered waiting for my new amp that i purchased from sonic electronix, they do handle 1000 watts rms but i wouldn't go any more than that.

Alpine SWR-12D2

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

Idk where to start! It sounds great and had great thumping to it. Hits hard!
I love it. You must have to buy it to test it yourself.
You'll enjoy it as much as I do. You get what you paid for!

Pros: power handling are strong as describe and has nice clear bass!

Cons: N/A

Owned for a little over one month...

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

I purchased this sub to pair with Pioneer GM-D8601 @1ohm and 800w RMS. I ran into issues with the subwoofer's durability and ease of use. After only two weeks of low to moderate volume levels (with matched gains for Pioneer headunit) one of the manufacturer banana plug jumpers popped off. Shortly after fixing this issue with jumpers of my own, the sub would sometimes work and othertimes not. The amplifier was tested and worked fine with the same cabling, so the problem was the subwoofer.

Other gripes include the spring-loaded terminals on the subwoofer providing lower tension than I would imagine for a sub rated up to 1kw RMS. I would have preferred screw-on terminals due to the lackluster spring tension and location on the underside of the subwoofer. If you mount this subwoofer horizontally (typical install) with the "R" right-side up, the wiring hangs beneath the subwoofer, possibly shaking loose.

Overall, the Alpine Type-R is still a good value for the cost and performance, but the factory jumpers and internal components may be defective or come loose after light use. Lesson learned; I will use my own jumpers from now on. Good thing I purchased the additional warranty as the loose jumpers was not the only issue I encountered. Hopefully the replacement is better.

Alpine Type-R 12" DVC 2ohm

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1222D).

This is a quality and reliable subwoofer for a good price. Everywhere else I checked this sub was priced at $200, got it here for much less. Have it paired up with an Alpine V-power 500w mono amp and it has handled just about anything i've thrown at it. Good investment for someone looking to add good bass to there ride.

Alpine SWR-12D2

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

I have this sub wired down to 1 ohms on a NVX JAD1200.1. I have it in a custom slot ported box tuned to 33 hz with 2.25 cubic feet of airspace. This sub hits crazy hard and low with excellent sound quality. This sub also has 20 millimeters of excursion, which means more air being moved, which is up there with a lot of the top of the line subwoofers. I am very impressed and pleased with the Type R. There is no doubt in my mind that you can feed this sub 1000 watts RMS. I've had it about a year now and it's still hitting hard. It looks mean and sounds even better. The only flaw with this sub is that it took forever to break in, but I also got it in the middle of winter. I highly recommend the Type R. Excellent product!

1 Ohm or Go Home

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

I ran this at 1 ohm with a budget SSL 5000D amp and with my 3 farad capacitor the headlights get a little draw still when I'm HAMMERING... It makes my hairs move and the seat becomes part of the music.

I also put it in a sealed box to max capacity air space because I like rock and rap with some others around that too. If you just want bass galore then I recommend a ported box but, it wasn't my preference for my taste of music. You will need to upgrade your door speakers to match the performance and clarity of this brilliant monster.

At 1 ohm the sub slams and my amp is running cool. I don't why you would run a mono amp at anything less. Gain at 3/4 and bass boost at 0. I adjust the rest through the head unit. I could go on forever on how great every song sounds now but, you need to hear it yourselves.

If you are in the market seriously shopping... save this page and look around. You will not find a better sub for the price. Definitely a competition subwoofer. I have just one in a Jeep Wrangler 2002 and I never thought this upgrade would be this good from my Infinity 12".

Nice Subwoofer

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

I replaced a 10 year old Infinity Perfect 10 with this sub and am pleased. I'm still working out my gain/output settings from my LC-7 for a balanced sound with my existing system. The bass is definitely more powerful now and sounds more like when I had two of the Perfects in previous systems. I have it in a sealed box of approx. 1.0 cubic feet in my spare tire well and get good bass levels through the back seat of a Jaguar, which is pretty well padded. Construction is good and I have no issues so far.

Great woofer!

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

The new Alpine Type R is phenomenal and so is the service SonicElectronix provides. Heres my story:

I purchased the SWR-12D4 and shipping was very fast. With it, I also bought the HiFonics GLX 1400.1D. I wired the speaker at 2ohms giving it a total of 1000 Watts and WOW. This thing at 1000 Watts rattled my brains all freaking day. I do not recommend giving this speaker 1000 Watts unless you get it installed professionally. My type R blew after 20 hours of almost non-stop pounding (totally my fault). After I called SonicElectronix, they explained to me that you shouldn't wire it at 1000 unless conditions are absolutely perfect. I assumed the worst but here is the best part THEY REPLACED IT FREE OF CHARGE!!! They even gave me the 2ohm model instead so I could wire it at 4ohms @ 500 watts instead. I could not believe it. It says everywhere in the warranty and return policy that they do not replace blown woofers, but they did it anyway. SONICELECTRONIX UNTIL THE DAY I DIE!!

I have been running this sub for a month now. All I can say is wow! I accidentally bought the dual 2 ohm and at this point I'm kinda glad I did. I have it bridged to 4 ohms and am running it off a 7 year old Sony 9001gtr amp. I had to turn the sub adjustment on my deck down into the - range. Because this thing runs so hard. Even at 500 watts. I will definitely be buying another one for my girlfriend's car.

Amazing subs for great price

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

I have 4 of these subs running off 2000 rms @ 1 ohm and they handle it with ease and rattle everything in my car. Probably one of the if not the best subs you can buy within this price range. I've owned a lot of subs and I love Alpine products. I have also owned both models of these subs before this one and they were good too. With these you get the value of what you normally have to pay twice as much for. Great build, great sound quality and output, overall great value, and price. Would highly recommend to anyone as long as you have the amp to power them. Type R series from Alpine are the way to go.

Best Subs You Can Buy

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

When I say "best subs you can buy" I mean, they are the best ones you can buy at a store (with the exception of Alpine Type-X's), because I'm not sure how true it is because I've never heard any, but I always heard the best subs you can get are the competition subs you have to order.
I've had these installed for a bout a month now, and use them just about every day. They hit hard as hell and I have them under powered. They're rated for 300-1000 RMS watts, and I only have them hooked up through one Alpine amp that is 11000 watts, so they're only pushing out 550 RMS watts each (I have two 12's). From other reviews I read, many people have said only 1 of these 12" subs sound better than most 2 12" sub set ups, and I believe it.
For anyone that is going to buy these (especially if it's more than 1) I recommend buying a secondary battery (Kinetik, Reissen, Stinger, etc.), and a battery isolator (do not get a capacitor, everyone has told me they're junk).
I also recommend buying them from Sonic Electronix since they're $149.

Great sub and small boxs!!!

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

I have 2 that are in a 2 chamber small sealed box 0.8 after sub. This is great for rock and everything more control of the drivers for tight bass and sq pushing. 300 watts each at 4 ohms And one in a ported at 34hz .1,43cf after flared port and sub displacement I used a 3" port by 10.5 long and it slams 600 watts at 4 ohms. I like 4 ohms at less rms then 2 ohms at full rms. For the price and build you cant go wrong. I am just not sure if you want to feed them 1000 or more watts . 1/2 of that will still do you good.

Ridiculous Bassness! Crazy Boom! Boom!

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

I must say I have been researching for the right subwoofer for about a year and then came across this baby! Let's just start off with the basics. I have one of these Alpine SWR 12D2's in a custom bulit ported box hooked up to a hifonics brutus brz1200.1d amp, wired to 1 ohm.

This subwoofer has clearly exceeded my expectations. At first I was skeptic thinking that it would not be able to handle 1000 watts and boy was I wrong. It has been about 7 weeks now since I have had this sub and it still is hodling out pretty strong!

For the cost of this sub you cannot go wrong, very affordable and a big bang for your buck. The look is very simple but slick with a glossy black finish, and the durabiltiy of this sub is very well built in terms of weight and structure. Alpine, you have made me a fan and in the future I will most likely purchase another sub to make my system slap my socks off!

Pure Bass

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

Once again Alpine has done it. A good, durable sub for a great price, what more could you ask for? As soon as you open the box, you see that glossy shine from the cone. Its sleek design is sure to be an eye-catcher.

Probably the most common set up with this sub is indeed the Hifonics Brutus 1200.1D. The voice coils on these babies are rated as 500 RMS each, which adds to a total 1,000RMS, but these subs can handle more, just don't abuse them too much! Wired to the sub is a Hifonics Brutus 1200.1D, at a full 1 Ohm load. The sub hits very well, and is accurate to most songs out there. Most people think two subs are in the back, and they are surprised that its only just one! (But remember, get the proper enclosure, it does make a HUGE difference - use the recommended specs from Alpine). The sub is in a sedan. Lots of rear view mirror shaking and trunk rattling. Its been over 7 weeks now and the sub still looks brand new. To the people out there who had problems with the same exact set up, I'd hope you had a warranty so you can get a new one.

Disapointed

I bought a pair of these Alpine subs as an upgrade to my 2 kicker cvr's powerd by a Rockford Fosgate T1000. The Kickers sounded much better so I returned them and got 2 Kicker cvx and RF T1500 now very happy.

Amazing sub!!

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

My brother has 2 of the original Type R's, with a 2000 watt amp, and they POUND! I recently bought one of these new 12d2's, and have it on an 800 watt amp, and my one will keep up with his 2 all day! It's in a ported box, and it rattled my license plate off, cracked my taillights, and everything in the car shakes like crazy. Looks BA too.

Not very impressed...

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

I purchased this sub about 4 months ago. I broke it in for 2 weeks an i have it in a 1.5 cubic foot box and power it with a hifonics brz1200.1. A lot of my friends have had the past versions of the type R and i thought they were awesome, but this sub has been nothing but trouble. It over heats like crazy. I can't even get through a whole song with out my car smelling like burnt plastic and copper... It hits hard for the 2 min i can play it but after that if you feel the cone it will literally burn your hand... I never had this problem with my p3, 2 p2's or the old t1 and now I'm considering getting a new T1 cause I've never had any problems with RF. I would not recomend this sub to anyone that wants to bump for more than 2-3 min...

Great!

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1223D).

These things have some power. No doubt the best I've heard. The neighbors get so mad, even people driving next to me. I have mine wired at 2 ohms hooked to a power acoustik 3000 watt amp. I'm sure the amp isn't pushing 3000 watts all the time, but the subs still get insane power, and have great power handling.

Competion worth!

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

Installed this sub in my 2013 Accord sport sedan with an Alpine 500W RMS Digital amp and this sub can hit lower than anything I've ever heard For the money I wouldn't consider buying anything else. A few rattles I have to take care of with Dynamat but blows everyones ears off that I give a ride to. Takes a while to tune right with no rattles but You wont be disappointing!!

1000 watt RMS!!! JOKE

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

Ok I would like to first off state I have owned the two Type R's before this one in a 10". The last one looks very similar other than the front finish and color. When I first seen this new 2012 announced I just had to get one since it could handle another 400 watt rms! Well guess what it doesn't. I have a Brutus 1200.1 that powered my last Type R great. This new one how ever for some reason can not even handle the same power. Same amp settings, same custom built box, same car. I'm not saying its a bad subwoofer and you shouldn't get one but if you already have a Type R like I did or are expecting more power don't get it! Very disappointed in you Alpine. I may be done.

hits hard and is durable

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1223D).

I have two in a ported box running at 400watts each. Wired to 2 ohms. They slam. They don't have much distortion. I got them 6 months ago and held up great. I got an alpine 15 type-r and need to install it. All I have is Alpine in my car. Also 4 spr-60c component speakers from alpine. I'm running them at 50 watts each and they're great. I'm going to run them at 100 watts each soon since they're rated 110 rms. Anyway alpine is awesome and the way to go. With just those 2 swr 1223d's I've gotten pulled over for shaking a cop's windows while I was at a red light and he was over in a parkinglot about a block away.

I have one Type R in my 1997 Cadillac Deville in a slot box hooked to a 800 watt Power Acoustic CPT2-1500 amp. With the amp bridged and running at 2ohm's it hits extremely hard and the sound quality is awesome. However it dosen't take long for the amp heats up and shuts down. Blows anything else in this price category out of the water.

Bought this to replace my 1 year old Type S. My daily driver is a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country (Hey I got kids and they haul crap). I just wanted a little more than what the S was giving me. Got way more than I had hoped for. I thought I would get about double the sound. Nope its way more than double. I have this matched to a Pioneer GM D8601. Puts out (True) 800RMS @ 1ohm. Installed it today and got it set up. I dont do the break in ritual some people live by but I do take it easy for the first hour. Then retune and go all out. I must say for 1 12 in a 1.5cuft slot port in the back of a minivan sounds like I got way more than what I do have. Got a buddy at work work running 2 12' JL W3s and I cant wait to run the db meter with him to see how this compares. I know vehicle makes a difference and box but hes got those in a Tahoe in slot ports and they dont hit as hard. So heres my Pros and Cons....
Pros:
Way under priced (For what it is should really be in the 350+ range)
Very well built
Love the new look
Packaging is solid
Puts out way more than expected
Comes with jumpers

Cons:
Only 1 The included jumper wires.
I run 8ga speaker wire. Why? Mostly because I can, but I do notice a difference in responsiveness and also amp runs way cooler. But that being said the included jumpers have cheap banana ends on them. When I put the 8ga into the push terminals it makes the banana only go half way in. Was a little worried about them popping out so ended up using the set that I had from my type S that seemed a bit sturdier. Plan to rework inside the box and just make my own jumpers to eliminate the potential problem.

I have had 1 in my truck for 2 weeks now, after my Kicker Comp VR finally blew. No dig on Kicker, cause that bad boy lasted me a hellish 8 years. This sub just gets better and better! I'm slowly moving the settings up, just out of my own choice, but man, WOW. I cannot wait to really pound on this thing! I have it in a Supercab F150, in a 1.27 cu.in. ported box. Alpine type R vs Kicker L7

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1223D).

I bet a lot of you wonder which system would hit harder.. i had 2 kicker L7's 12" a couple monthes back, they hit im not gonna lie. but when i got 2 type r's recently, i am absolutely amazed of how hard they hit. im not over exagerrating but when i drive my vision gets blury, my throat starts to choke in a way, and ribcage rattles. So in my opinion type R would be my first choice no matter what. If you get a huge box and a powerful amp for these than i guarantee it can out do most 12 " subwoofers.

Great sub

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1223D).

This subwoofer definetly gets the job done. It sounds great and has a solid punch. I have one of these in a smaller sealed box, I think its 1 cubic feet, but one should get a larger box in it. Only problem is that it does tend to rattle when it gets to high volumes, but only when a song has booming bass so it doesn't happen that often, could be the box. I added this in my 08 jeep cherokee and its a good combo with my recently added speakers. Here's what I got; sub amp- kenwood kac-7204 (bridge the two channels) head unit- kenwood excelon, front seat- boston acoustics pro60SE, back seat-boston acoustics sc65. Sub sounds great with the replaced speakers, but a four channel amp is still on my list. Overall the 1223d wont dissapoint you, and it was a nice upgrade from my 2 jl audios 120v2-4. With just one type-r it sounds better and louder. However, there are still better subs out there.

WOW these things POUND. i sat in the back seat the first day he got them and i found it hard to breath. my other buddy has L7 12's 750 rms each with a jbl 1500 rms amp @ 2 ohms. these Alpines compare. believe it or not they might be just as loud as the L7's. THis is a great sub. Has a pounding bass. I have it in a ported box with 2 cubic feet tuned at 38 Hz. This sub is great because it will play at 4,2, and 1 ohm. I only had a JL audio 1200e pushing 200 watts rms and this sub is about blown. But this is a great sub. Just take it very easy on it for a while to make sure it doesn't mess up. For anyone out there who doesn't want to spend a lot of money but they want alpine type r's...don't be stupid and buy the dual 4 ohm!!!...buy these, you can get double the amount of wattage wiring them at 2 ohms and i don't know one single brand amp out there that isn't 2 ohm stable.. Great subs, loudest subs i've heard in a long time!!!

loud.

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1222D).

Seriously some really nice subs. I haven't even powered them to the fullest, and i don't really plan on it... i don't need to! they're so loud and hit so hard even at lower wattages -- i used to have 2 10inch infinity kappa's and at higher output on the amp they were much quieter than these.

Great Product

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1222D).

I put this one sub in my maxima to complete my alpine system and it hits. i had always heard the type r was good, but i didnt realize it was as powerful as it is. it was a very good price for the performace it uses. i am pushing it with the alpine 1000 watt mono, a little too much for the sub because i put it in a huge ported box and i dont want to blow it. i will probably move up the type x soon. if you are looking for one sub, buy the 4ohm not the 2, i made that mistake, but if you are getting 2 subs get the 2ohm, you will pull more power from the alpine amp.

Great sub, have it hooked up to a PDX-M6 (600watts) and this thing pounds hard. It's great in the ported box that I made for it, definitely go for a larger sized PORTED box. I just got my second one yesterday with a brz2100.1D (2ohms@1400) cant wait to install.

Pros: Low price, Perfect product
Cons: Length of time waited( it was 2 50 lb. boxes) other than that none.

Much better than I thought

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1222D).

Set up: pioneer HU
2 type r's
Sound storm 2600 mono
Kole Audio cap
Absolute sealed box

Just got these hooked up yesterday (2-25-10) and holy hell they hit so hard I can't hear anything inside my car. Got them in a sealed box 1.8 cu per chamber running at 1ohm. I was a little leary on buying these cause I never owned anything Alpine but my dad has a 10" type S and after hearing that I wanted the 12 and take it a step further. I have owned many subs DD, Sony, Bazooka, Kenwood, and the list goes on but non seemed impressed me until these. If you want some major bang for your buck I recommend get two of these bad boys and you won't regret it I sure don't. But get them from sonic best price you will find anywhere. Went to a local audio shop and they wanted $250 for one!!

Alpine still makes really great subs

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1222D).

Before owning the 2x type Rs I had 1x JL Audio 12w7 and I have to say the two type Rs are MUCH better!!! The SQ of these subs is just amazing. Very tight and very powerful. I have heard these subs in a side by side comparison against the 1x JL audio 12w7 using both a rockford T2000bd amp and a slash 1000/1 amp and they sound better in both cases. These are the gold standard in subs and with good reason. Get them and you will not be disappointed!!

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1222D).

This subwoofer is great. After owning it for 6 months I can truthfully say that this is a top notch subwoofer. The bass is very clean and loud. I have this sub in a ported 1.7 Cubic foot enclosure whitch is tuned to 33hz. I love my cars sound system to be loud but also very clear with no distortin. In my car this sub is set to be a perfect balance between spl and sq. Do your homework when matching this sub with an amp and enclosure and you will love it.

Alpine Type R

Great sub. Best bang (or "bump") for your buck. Will handle well over the 500rms that is stated. I have a single 12, running off of 800wrms and it takes it like a champ! If you tune your amp properly, and give this thing a nice ported box, it will give you what you want- BASS!

I paid too much for this sub, as I purchased it from a shop in my city. I should have looked online in the first place. It was WELL worth it though.

Great Subs!

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1222D).

I've got two of these powered by a hifonics 1000w and they hit o-so-wonderfully. The guy above is confused though. If you want 1 sub get the 2ohm one because then you can wire to 1ohm and almost all (good) amps can handle that. If you get two then you have to run 2ohm or .5ohm and not many companys make amps that will handle .5ohm and 2ohm's isn't as much power (which is what im running). Even at 2ohms they sound killer though. Worth way more then you will pay, I promise.

Goes low, and stays punchy

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1222D).

I have one of these Alpine 12's in my Accord. It's fully powered and in a box built exactly to Alpine specs. This subwoofer produces extremely accurate bass for a 12" subwoofer. It produces tight bass lines even while listening to Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries"(That's classical music). It can really shake your car with the hard hitting bass from rap music as well as electronic and techno. The sub does tend to get a little sloppy with the tight bass lines from rock music. I noticed it was a little "boomy" during some of my Smashing Pumpkins songs and didn't seperate the bass notes very well while I was listening to Stevie Ray Vaughn. The versatility of the sub is great as far as wiring configurations and box applications. Although you can put it in a vented enclosure, it really belongs in a sealed box. Just make sure you give it enough power and it will perform. All in all this is a solid performing sub, but if you're looking for that really punchy bass, go with a 10" sub.

Fantastic Subs!!!!

I have had these subs for over a year now and they still bump! I am running 2 12WD4 in a custom ported box running 1800W RMS to both of them at 1ohm with 1G oxygen-free wire and a big 3 upgrade. With this set up my windshield flexes like crazy and the truck sounds like it wants to fall off when I push them to their full potential. You tune them right and they will go off! Absolutely worth the price!!!

great subs

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1223D).

I have two older Alpine SWRs. My older version are 600 watts RMS as opposed to the new Alpine SWR which is 1000 RMS. If you are on a budget to get good quality bass, these subs are a great buy. ive had these subs for over a year in parallel with a 1000 watt Rockford Fosgate D1000 amp. Im running my subs a little low but I have a lower chance of blowing them. I am a little bummed because I wish i had the newer alpine SWR's becuase of the higher wattage handling. Overall, very pleased! These subs preform phenominally in a ported box with about 1.3 cubic ft/ sub.

Amazing quality out of this American Built puppy

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1223D).

Have one of these hooked up in my Jetta TDI. Wasn't looking for car shaking bass for this car, so the setup i got was perfect. This sub in a sealed box at 4 ohms and a hifonics brutus 1200 amp is a great combo to generate a sound that is deep and super clear and rattling in the 2006 Jetta which is what i was looking for, hitting perfect on all the songs that i blast when i am seeking a thumping bass. This sub i can tell is built with extreme quality and built to last a really long time. Highly recommended and great service from Sonic at a good price.

I purchased this sub after my JL audio fried six months ago. I like to listen to loud music on long drives and this sub can handle the abuse. Awesome frequency range compared to most I looked at in my price range. Hits hard and provides a powerful nicely toned bass for all types of music, from country to rap. I would recommend this product to others and I tell all my friends exactly what kind of sub they have when they ask after their ears have been pounded.

Gread Sub

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1222D).

I have two of these subs running them at 600W at 1 ohm each for about two years now. You need to dynamat your trunk and your shelf if you do not want you trunk to rattle. I also have it filled with foam, and license plate on a two side scotch tape. At first i had it in a sealed box, and in about a year moved them 3.4 vented (inside volume not outside) 1.7 per speaker. They play lower and louder in a vented box also creating more pressure. I got to say that two of these might be an overkill but for me overkill is under rated.

I just purchased this sub(1 dual 2ohm) a week ago(7/22/06) & it is outstanding. the S.Q. from this sub in 1.75>3ft. ported box is very good considering this is the biggest box alpine suggests. Reversing phase on subs makes it even more accurate. I am running it at 1ohm on an Autotek MX2000 at 1/2 gain on boost & it hits harder & louder than the 3-12" Ground Zero Radioactives I had in a 1>3ft. per. sealed at same amp settings. Outright out bangs them with less curent draw & more accurate. Sounds like my L7's just more accurate & cleaner.

I have owned two of the type s series years back and good grief they were loud, or so I thought, they cracked the glass on the hatch of the 89 mustang they were in. Fast forward to now and I currently have two 2ohm type R. Pushed by a rockford fosgate t-1000bdcp amp. They shake my seats, the roof of my car flexes. With the amps constant power technology at 2 ohm I'm feeding both speakers just a hair under their rated rms. They get as low as the box and amp will let them and when the highs come in (100ish hz)
It sounds like there's a really pissed beast trying to rip its way out of my trunk. They're FANTASTIC subs. I beat on them every single day for at least an hr of full rms pounding. To the point that get a bit smelly. Yet every day they sound amazing. I paid $350 each so seeing them for so cheap here makes me think about adding a couple more to the mix. You will not be disapointed with this sub. I can promise you that. They're built for abuse....

Awsome subs

Went from 2 old 500rms type r subs to these and the difference is huge! These are a lot louder and just seem to hit every note better!

Just just as good as my ID and RF subs.. hits hard

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

This is a sleeper sub! It is on par with my Image Dynamics 12" ID subwoofer. Its smooth and hits hard! It has a great rollover and the bass is full. iT can be mounted in a sealed box as small as .55. I have mine in a sealed .70 c.f. box and it sounds amazing...and it can crank too! Great budget quality sub that can really get low.

These Subs hit Crazy Hard

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

These subs are crazy loud. I powered 3 of them, each with a 1000w 2ohm kenwood amp and it will tear my SUV apart if I turn it up to just 3/4 volume. Only downside is even with the subs turned to -15 on the radio they are still louder than the fronts. Had to turn the amps down to half power.

Blows anything else in this price category out of the water.

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

Absolutely love this thing. Upgraded from a Type S. Paired perfectly with my Pioneer GM D8601 mono amp. Puts out true 800 watts RMS at 1 ohm so don't even break a sweat (heck don't even get warm to the touch). Have it in a 1.62 cubic foot slot port box tuned to 35 hz. Come summer I plan to put it in a box that is the exact recommended size but tune to 32hz. 35 is great, but really drops out on the low notes. May try a few different to see what works best for me.

Pros:
Hits way harder than comparably priced subs on the market
Very clean construction love the new look
Very versatile in adding to your set-up. Comes with nice jumpers

Cons: (Not much)

I use 8 Guage power wire as my speaker wire. On my Type S the terminals readily accepted freshly stripped tightly twisted 8ga without needing a lug or banana clip. The jumpers sat firmly in the top of the terminal with the terminal remaining 90% depressed due to my choice in large wire. On the new R it handles it but stays about 98% depressed and the included jumpers barely stay in. When I do the new box I plan to use some type of lug or clip maybe a dual 8ga to single 8 lug and replace the jumper all together with an 8ga power wire jumper.

The included jumpers claim to be 8ga but are more like 9ish and the clips are not as sturdy as what was included with the type s I have. Nothing to whine about just make sure you pay attention and if you unplug them ever take the time to spread them out again so they seat properly once again.

Lastly not really a con more of a compliment but being it's my only sub I wasn't expecting having to reattach my rear view mirror because this thing shook it off. Also needed to place a clamp on the stem of the rear view to keep it from pointing at the floor.

Alpine swr12d2

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

This is the second set I've had. The first lasted 3 years until my amp shorted and caught fire sending a power surge blowing the old ones. If my amp didn't fail these subs sure would've lasted a lot longer. They hit very hard. I've blown the rear hatch window right out of my crx while going 70mph down the highway lol. They almost hit too hard. Great subs at a decent price

Finally put it in

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

It's a nice speaker. I got the 2 ohm and didn't realize with duel voice coils you can make them 4 ohm by series hook up or 1 ohm parallel. With a 2 ohm stables amp I have to run it at 4 ohms. The only way to get 2 ohms final would be adding another 4 ohm final and parallel them. With only 1 sub I should have got the 4 ohm to get 2 ohm. It's misleading could have been clearer. Not a big deal I have s huge 1200 mono giving me 700 at 4 and it's plenty. I still could tweek amp and crossover settings but it got realistic 12" sound. I would like to get more puch but don't except this to do that I am getting other systems going hopefully for that. Added the matching alpine 5 1/4 component today running off the head but have an amp to add to them. I probably would have gone 8 or 10 but the price for this was hard to pass. I'm not a big booming bass fanatic but like to have kick. Why lie bass pedals on Genesis Dance on the Volcano is awesome Song choice amp and settings make a difference with final sound and this sub is sounding versatile. Trying to get George Benson Breezing to audiophile quality in my Saab 900 S. S could be for Sonic now. Having changed out from a Bass Link it's 100 times the bass and 100 times cleaner. I would have to directly compare it to another similar sub to have more of an opinion but I'm pleased with it alpine is a name I am familiar with. Don't think you can go wrong with this if you have room. It has a big power handling cap and a big amp on it. Woo I added the Alpine matching grill too.

Alpine SWR-12D2

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

I bought two of these babies, along with a Kicker KX1600.1 (1600 watt) amp. I built the fiberglass sub inclosure (3.23 cubic feet, for both subs in one sealed box, "fighting one another"). "Bad to the bone" does not even begin to explain the awesome sauce that these babies force out! Get this setup, and your next problem will be, trying to pad your vehicle, so nothing rattles. If you want to be heard, and I mean crisp and clear, there's no doubt about the fact that these SWR-12D2's are the ticket! This is a GREAT price, for the product! When shopping for the components, for my system, I was looking totally for the most RMS power handling ability. 1000 watts, per sub, is AWESOME! Just shop around, if you don't believe me.

Very Nice

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-12D2).

Years ago (1999 to be exact) I bought 3 JL 10W3's for $150 each. Today (2015) I bought this sub for about the same price. Inflation has not increased the price of everything!!! This sub is way better than the JL 10W3 and is about the same price. I have the sub in a ported enclosure. I'm using just one 12 inch sub. I think the sound is very nice. Hits lower than my 10's did of course (I owned other subs between the JL's and this one by the way). I am very pleased with the construction and feel of the sub. It just looks and feels very quality, durable, well made, etc. I am able to listen to fast rock and roll as well as slower hip hop and rap music. The sub seems to handle everything quite well. I would definitely recommend this sub.

Best subs ever

I had bought these subs a few years back. I'm running them on the strong kenwood class d. they are in ported boxes, 2 12" in my civic. Everything would shack my back glass broke and my subs still look new. Just put the type-r in sealed boxes, even hits harder and could here it from blocks away. Also theres no radeling in the truck.

type r

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1223D).

i just bought mine on thursday and got it yesterday on monday wow it got here fast. i had a jl audio w6 for a while and it blew and before i got the w6 i was looking at the type-r and was interested in it but got the w6 for cheap on craigslist. I'm running a rockford fosgate prime 500 to it the same one i ran to the w6 and as far as loudness and thump the type-r has so far been deffinetly louder then the w6 was even though im still on the break in period, so many new rattles came up once i put it in my durango and i havent even had it on past 20 on the volume yet. but for sound quality the w6 seems to be far better. It hit so many more notes then the type-r seems to be able to hit and the transition between the bass notes was a lot crisper, the type-r seems to struggle transitioning between notes. type-r: louder then w6; w6: way better sound quality.

Alpine R series is one of the best ever made

I'll be honest and say that I don't have this current model, I have the one from ten years ago called the 1223D and it's been put through years of abuse and is still going strong. It only has 600w rms compared to this new one but I currently have it wired down to 1ohm hooked up to a Pioneer GM-8701 thrown into a ported box in the cab of my Ranger. It pounds just as hard as the day I got it in 2010. I want to upgrade to this new one since it has 150w rms more and my amp has 800w rms at 1ohm but this old type r won't die! If you want something that has deep bass and longevity all for a great price? This is the one.

Pretty cool Subwoofers!!! I gotta admit when I first heard these in the car I was hype. I put them in my wifes car. They hit pretty hard i must admit!! However, I noticed that this sub struggles between notes in hitting the beat on time. The subwoofers in my other vehicle hit wayyyyy crisper than these speakers. -1 on Quality for that one. Powerful Subs though.

Great SQ Subwoofers

The following review is for a previous version (SWR-1222D).

Great subs, the RMS is 500 watts, and after about a year of having these, I've slowly brought them up to around 600watts @ 2ohms mono, and they have been running PERFECT. They sound 10x better than my old L7's SQ wise. They are easily the best sounding subs I've ever owned, and I've owned about 6 different sets.
