The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

These speakers pack a lot of punch for their size. They are receiving 110RMS and love it, crystal clear highs and a surprising amount of bass and mid range as well. It almost sounds like little subs are mounted in the doors, very nice !!!!

Good sound at a reasonable price

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

I went from a set of Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1s which were ear bleedingly bright. They Kappas were so harsh both my wife and I couldn't even listen to them (after 5 minutes we were in pain). The Kappas were twice the cost of these Alpines.

These Alpines provide a nice overall smooth sound. They are a little lacking on the mid-bass, but I have the rears set as subs so it is not an issue in the least. We really enjoy these.

alpine spr60c

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

These speakers sound really good. I am running them off a power acoustic ps800 that puts out about 150 watts rms. The speakers handle it with ease. They have great minds and highs. You can hear every detail. For lows I have a single swr10d4 that is 1000 watts rms being pushed by a Hifonics Brutus BRX 1600.1D and fine tuned with a clarion eqs746 equalizer. Needless to say my system sounds awesome. I highly recommend the spr60c component speakers. I don't know of any cons about these speakers. If you want good clear sound at a fantastic price then buy these from SONIC ELECTRONIX you will be pleased. Thanks Sonic.

Highly Recommended

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

I purchased this component system to replace the previous Polk Audio DB6501 installed in my Honda S2000. These Alpines have good mid bass and crisp highs. I'm running a Polk Audio PA 4000.4 amplifier to power them. For S2000 owners you need a speaker bracket for the speakers to fit.

HU: Alpine CDA 9886
Speakers: Alpine SPR 60C
Subwoofer: Alpine SWA-10S4
Amplifier: Polk Audio PA 4000.4

Good value on upgrade

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

Both the site and product was recommended to me by my security/audio installer. This speaker with tweeter set is a nice entry level upgrade compared to the stock counter parts. The sound is a lot clearer and louder at a lower volume setting. Now music and navigation commands are audible with the top down.

Great Speakers

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

These are definitely great speakers, especially when powered properly with an amp. My headunit eq is set to flat and the music sounds rich and full. The highs and mids blend perfectly and they output a good amount of bass considering their size. Absolutely no regrets on buying these.

Great Speakers

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

Sound Great. Powered by NVX JAD800.4. They have a decent amount of midbass too. The tweeters arent harsh to me. I also have the cross over set at 0. So sound fine. Tweeters swivel which is good. The 6x8 brackets that came with them were easy for install. Crossovers are tiny and easy to hide as well.

Good speakers

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

Don't really know how to review these because I don't know how to compare them. I first listened to them in a local audio store and they sounded very clear. When I hooked them up in my car to a rockford Fosgate p300x2 they still sounded good but i think they could use more power. Currently sending them 100rms and my deh-x7700bs needs to be a little over half way(about 35-38 out of 60max) to listen at a normal level while driving. I will probably upgrade the amp later on, great speakers though.

top drawer speaker at a great price, get some!

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

This component speaker sounds great and has top notch build quality. The crossovers are small and will fit in tight places. I agree with the other reviewers that the tweeters are a tad bright but nothing that the tweeter level control can't tame. I set them at -4db. I am driving these with a 60w per channel MB Quart amp and they sound great. The bass goes lower than I thought they would. They sound is very detailed. I think they do best with Rock and modern Jazz. They sound like they could handle a lot more power pretty easy too. If you are looking for some quality, clean sounding component speakers without breaking the bank, you found them. Sonic is the best place to buy them too. They package well and ship fast. They are a professional company without a doubt. I will be back in the future to do business with them.

Great sound

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

Purchased to replace 9 year old Infinity's. Are hooked to same Alpine PDX-F4 amp. What a difference. They play louder and a bit cleaner. Highs are not quit as crisp as a hard doom tweeter but do not have the occasional ring as a hard doom. Is a fair trade off. Sonic's price is definitely a plus.

Much better than the previous generation!

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

I had the previous version of these speakers installed in my last vehicle... They were VERY bright, but with very little midrange or bass. When I saw Alpine had released a new model, I was hesitant to pick them up due to the previous version, but with the awesome price here I decided to give them a try.

I'm VERY glad I did. The speakers are still incredibly bright (and I would recommend a -4db or more selection on the crossovers), but once tweaked to your liking these speakers sound awesome. The midrange and bass are back in full-force, and the sound is clear and crisp (no muddy tones here).

Without an amp, the speakers are still impressive, but for full-effect a 4-channel amp really is needed. I'm currently running them through a Kenwood KAC-8405, also picked up through Sonic Electronix, and I'm incredibly happy with the combination.

I would certainly recommend these speakers to anyone remotely interested in them.

What my stereo has been missing!

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

I just installed these in my 06 F150. They can can be made to fit with a little trimming of the door pockets and using the included adapters. I was running some Kicker coaxial's in the front and difference is amazing! With the Kickers I would get some listening fatigue after some time and these can stay cranking! The mid's are exactly what I had been longing for! With the others the tweeters seemed to be too harsh and drown out any mid bass I might have been getting. Still have the Kickers, but they have been delegated to the back doors on the smaller amp. Giving the Alpines 100W each side and they sound wonderful!!!

These are great speakers. The midrange is great and the bass is much better than expected. The highs can be harsh if you don't alter the level on the crossover but other than that these are fantastic when given the right amount of power.

Exceeds Expectations

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

Sound quality is excellent. Note that the previous comments about the powerful tweeters are accurate. I set my tweeters to -4 and I may turn them down further to balance the sound.

Running a sound quality setup with 100 RMS per channel from an Alpine amp. Took my time with the install to properly sound dampen the doors. Couldn't be happier with the results.

Alpine SPR-60C

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

I've had them for about a week, powered by a Soundstream Reference 500SX, 250W x 2, at 4 ohms. At first they were VERY bright, but about a week later, the tweeters are finally starting the break in a little, and a lot of the harshness is now gone. No big deal, I have no reduction on the tweeters at all right now, and the "crossovers" that came with them have 3 levels of reduction for the tweeters.

I mounted them on 2 stacked 3/4" thick MDF rings, with a foam baffle at the back, and polyfill stuffed behind the woofers.

Very happy with them. Obviously a huge improvement over the "premium" system that came with the car.

Way more bass than Alpines have been known for in this size of speaker, i.e. compared to the SPR-17C. Much more oomph with the 60Cs. Same crystal clear mids and uppers. Definitely shows off really high bit rate music.

Since I have not been running them very long, I cannot really accurately assess durability, but previous Alpine speakers have proven to be durable barring user error.

The Best Component Speakers I've Ever Heard!

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

Absolutely love these speakers! This was my first experience with Alpine component speakers and I couldn't be happier. When I was in the testing phase of the install I listened briefly to them and thought they were alright but when I dialed in the amps and the head unit EQ these speakers really came alive and rocked my world. Great bass response (I almost regretted buying a sub...almost) crisp and clear highs. The aim-able tweeter is a nice feature allowing you to control the sound direction. I would recommend these to anyone with a car in which these will fit and recommend cutting a bigger hole for the others. Alpine has really hit a home run with these unbelievable speakers.

SPR-17S

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

I just upgraded from Alpine's Type-S components (Sps-610c) which I really liked. I really wasn't expecting a monumental difference, but I was surprised. The Rs have a much stronger bass response, and the higher quality crossovers seem to convey higher fidelity sound. I was also surprised by how much more power they want. They are only rated for 30 watts rms more than the Type-S, but that really doesn't seem right. I'm giving them about twice as much power as the the Ss could handle before distorting. I can't make the Rs distort. What surprised me the most is the R's tweeters. They have a quality that I'm not going to be good at describing. Warmer? Brighter? I'm not sure, but I love it. I read a review where someone said they preferred the S's tweeters to the R's. That almost put me off of buying these, but I'm glad it didn't. He must be crazy. These speakers are overall entirely superior. Alpine has yet to disappoint me.

Great fidelity and range!

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

While Alpine 6.5" have always been crystal clear, but in the past, some of their 6.5" woofers lacked in the lower registers. These SPR-60Cs have so much more depth at lower frequencies than the older and slightly cheaper SPR-17C. In fact after my pops heard my 60Cs, he has since decided to put his 17Cs in the rear and upgrade his fronts.

Excellent Speakers

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

Im very impressed with these speakers. Ive been toying with about 5 different sets over the last 4-5 months, and I have finally found something I am happy with. Theyre rated at 110 rms, but I am pushing 160 to them. They are more than happy with anything you can throw at them. When I first threw them in I adjusted the gain on the amp like you would with any new purchase - but get this: they did not distort at all. I could not hear my brother sitting in the car with me regardless how loud we were screaming at each other.

Let me tell you more about these bad boys.

The highs are not as crystal clear as I have found with other sets ive toyed with. I think kappas have more clear tweeters, but the kappa tweeter's metallic highs will cause severe listening fatigue. On the other hand, I can listen to these puppies at retarded volume levels all day long. I found that -2 to -4 db on the crossover is in the best listening range. -2 provides crisp highs but might be over powering with certain genres. -4 is not as crisp, but still provides excellent detail.

Now, Ive found that spr-60c's LOVE power. I originally ran 50 rms to them and they were decent. I was not disappointed at all. Midbass was alright, but I felt they needed a little more. 110 extra RMS later, I have a smile ear to ear from these guys. The 6.5 woofers have AMAZING midbass. Maybe it was the quality of the lossless tracks I was testing this set with, but I am now on a mission to deaden every panel possible trying to reduce vibrations on the doors. It's been a long time since I've felt this much bass at my legs.

Between a single 10" type r sub running 400 rms and this set running 160 at each corner, I've never been happier with an audio purchase. It's a great set for the money. Sure theres something lacking in the clarity department, but the mellow tone the set emits is very tolerable at all levels. They're not perfect, but you cannot complain about much a set this decent at such a reasonable price.

If you can afford them, look no further. I doubt there is any other set out there that can deliver the same performance as these guys. At 50 rms they're decent. At 160, they absolutely sing. Im only giving 4 overall stars because they could be a little more clear for this price point, but dont let this deter you from a great listening experience.

Great sound but need power

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

These are power hungry components. I like the fact that the tweeters aren't shrill. The midbass is not as good as some of the other audiophile expensive options, but these Alpines are superior to most of your common speakers. I highly recommend if you can get them.

Using a set of these powered by an Audioque 4X90 and they sound great! The tweeters are not too harsh and the mid drivers do a superb job!

The different tweeter mount options make them easy to install in a stock location or to mount them flush where there were no tweeters before. I went with the flush mount option and was impressed with how well the set-up worked.

I would say these are one of the better sounding component sets I have ever used.

TERRIBLE SPEAKERS!!

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

I have possibly had these speakers in for about a week and all i can say about them are they suck! the tweeters sound distorted beyond believe, even after I tuned with my Kicker 350.4 with the dd-1. I also have the coaxial version and they aren't any better. If you are looking for some real mid bass and good tweeters get a pair of re xxx 6.5 component! those things run like a machine performing better than JL Audio!

Components worth the bank

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

I am a fan of the Alpine products when it comes to the highs in my system. Component systems is my choice for the overall clarity. The deciding factor for alpine is low cost for high power output. I have a 2003 chevy silverado extended cab LS. Power feeding my highs is a 4 channel, alpine pdx-f4. 100 watt rms x 4. Originally I started with the spr-17s 6.5 components up front, 4 x 6 infinity reference in rear doors. Sounded good, crisp, clear. I liked it so much i wanted more. I removed my 4 x 6's, cutout the opening to fit a 6.5 component system. Installed the spr-60c's. Factory door speaker/grilles remain stock, only major change is the tweeter flush mounted next to it. That change brought the highs out even more and also looked good. The 60c's have same power output, are slimmer, look better, and woofer has more freeplay. I just recently ordered another spr- 60c component system for the front. You will not be disappointed with the product and love the sound.

The type r's have crisp lively highs and rich mids. the rms is much more than a deck puts out so once i powered them with 45 watts vs. 18 off the deck ,they really came alive. WAY clean and loud mids and highs, surprising bass...with the amp. these separats jam significantly better than their two way counterparts, which i run in the back doors.

Type R's

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

I researched as many different component sets under $200 as I could find and it was a toss up between these Alpine's and the Polk db6501's; having heard the Type R's in a local car audio store (priced about $100 more than Sonic) I took the plunge and am very happy so far with my selection. I've got my crossovers set at 80hz and tweeters set at -4db, but I still hear some harshness at loud volumes on a few tracks but some of that can be explained by poor reproduction from an mp3 file on an iPod...CD usually always sounds better and cleaner. Bass is strong, and midlevels are a little overpowering so some EQ adjustment was needed for me (I'm using a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X993 head unit). My components are up front in the factory door locations of a full-size GMC Savana van, and had a little trouble mounting the tweeters (thanks to GM) and finding a spot for the crossovers, but nothing new if you have ever installed speakers or components in cars before. I've only had them in for about 4 days so I'm clearly still breaking them in. I'm using an Infinity Reference 475a 4-channel amp for power (rear channels are bridged and powering a ported Kicker Comp 12). I must say that these speakers are meeting all of the expectations that I had (I'm very picky and very budget conscious) and exceeding some of them; the bass response is more than adequate for my needs and the clarity is really top-notch. So far I've tested them with Korn, Too Short, Tori Amos, Tom Petty and AC/DC...all genres have come out loud and clear and never sound overworked...and the gain on the amp is only up about halfway at the moment, so I know I'm not really near the true RMS rating for these speakers. Gonna push them a little harder after I've put them through their paces for another week or so. The Type R's are very well built and the crossovers are of great quality and durability (dropped one on concrete as soon as I popped it out of the box and no problems or cracks anywhere). If you have an amp that can push more than 50 watts of RMS per channel, then go for it. I'm looking forward to many years of loud and clear music in my big a** van...these things really fill up that large cabin nicely. Thanks Sonic and thanks Alpine.

They are power hungry and mounting depth is something to double check but will crank out some very accurate and powerful sound.

Worth Every Penny

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

You cant go wrong with these speakers. They pretty much do it all, from bass to the highs, the entire sound range is great. I get as much bass out of these as my 6x9's, and with a little more power from an external amp, these babies are untouchable

Great set of speakers

I got two sets for all 4 doors in my 07 Yukon Denali & wow!! This speakers give good bass & clear sound. I listen to all types of music & it all sounds great the tweeters are so clear. Don't think twice & just buy them.

ultra clear! but it hurts a bit.

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

these are great speakers. i love listening to all types of music on them, definitely metal and acoustic the most. they do pretty good for rap and pop too. the midbass overall is great. once you break them in after a couple weeks then they start to hit a bit lower.

the thing that i can't get over is the tweeters. they sound very clear and accurate but they can get really harsh at moderately high to loud volumes. its a love hate relationship.

Best speaker i've ever had

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

These speakers are the best, they sound clear and the bass is chest thumping, i have no sub yet but these speakers make me feel like i have a sub. This speaks won't sound good without a good amp so you'll need an amp to awaken their power. But the only downside is the tweets burned out after a few months, but still these are the best.

Perfect speakers!

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

I am pleased with these speakers. Great sound and from sonic electronix they were for a great price. I am running them off an amp to get the best sound. Especially at high volume. Great speakers. The only thing I didn't like was the install took a while on my car, but that's with any speaker. Great job alpine!!

nice speakers

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

These speakers are a very good buy for their performance. After installing and setup was done, they sounded great after some tweaking. The highs and mid's are crisp and not overpowered and with the amp I have powering them, the Alpine MRP-500, they never clip unless I turn the volume up all the way on the headunit. If you want great sounding speakers and not break the bank, these speakers are a very good buy.

lot of speaker for the money!

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

I bought these based off the research I did and also the system I was buildin' for my ride.
Quality, Quality is all I can say about alpine. I've always liked them from way back in high school to now when I can afford a nice set up in my rig.
I've got 2 set's of these in front and in the rear doors powered by the 4.150 channel amp and the sound is clear and tight with absolutley no distortion whatsoever and i've tried. when the volume gets to the point that my teenage kid has to step out of the truck because it hurts her ears you know it's good.
all in all very happy will last till i sell the truck.. :-)

my spr 17s review

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

Ok I got these and I'm undecided. First off I am giving them 120W each side and it has taken me over a month of fiddling with them. The highs and the tweets when u power them are way over powered.. I have a parametric on board EQ and I have to turn them way down on my entire system, and the crossover is on neg 7. I might have to just skip the alpine crossover and adjust off my amps manually. Out of the box its not balanced well but they do go loud as h*** powered, but the highs hurt the ears. I also put these in a 350z, they did not fit in the stalk mounts so I had to build up the door about 3/4 inch. So get ready for some modding if u plan to install in this car.

SPR-17S Good speaker set overall A+++

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

I put these SPR-17S speakers in the front doors of two of my vehicles. They deliver a very good punch and excellent highs. I installed the non-component version SPR-17C in the rear doors and overall, I would say it is a very good sounding system, much better by far than the factory OEM that I had. These speakers seem to handle the bass and treble with no problem and a bit better than the non-component version SPR-17C's but if you can't use these components in your application, the SPR-17C's are very a good choice.

Amazing!

The following review is for a previous version (R-S65C.2).

This component system sound quality is absolutely amazing. The mid-bass produces solid mid-low frequency and the tweeters tops it off with crisp highs. Installation was easy with the included brackets. The crossovers were small enough to mount in tight spaces.

Took awhile, but they finally sound awesome...

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

When I first had these installed I was highly disappointed. My factory stock 8" subwoofer had to be sacrificed in the install and all my bass seemed gone. I thought the midbasses on these would pick up some of the slack, because it was only a stock 8", but guess not...

At first I felt like I had wasted my money. But it turns out the amplifier powering these was high passed at 200Hz! That's about 100Hz higher than these can safely go. Once I switched them down to about 100Hz, things were sounding better. But the final push came from a proper headunit upgrade. Running off a low-end aftermaket headunit with no real EQ settings is a waste of time if you buy these speakers. I upgraded to an Alpine Ai-X305 with the PXA-H100 audio processor hooked to it and now, finally, more than a year after the initial install, these things SHINE.

Highs are as advertised, bright and crisp due to the metal tweeter dome; sibilence can be an issue but only when you get into the max volume ranges. Woofers have a decent amount of snap to them, but nothing compared to a real subwoofer or a higher end component set.

Gave features and durability a 4 only because compared to the SPX-17PRO's, the woofer materials and crossover network features are inferior.

Disappointing Alpine Product

The following review is for a previous version (R-S65C.2).

I never thought I would have to write such a negative review on an Alpine product…

I purchased these to replace a set of SPX-17REF’s that I messed up by getting metal shavings in the voice coil (don’t ask). I was VERY disappointed when I couldn’t even find a used or partial set of those to replace my one destroyed woofer. So, I purchased a set of these from Columbus Car Audio in Columbus, Ohio. I was expecting similar technology to the old Type-X’s I was reluctantly replacing. I was HIGHLY disappointed in these speakers. I am running them with a RF DSR-1 DSP in a true 3-way component system plus a Type-R 10” sub. With a full active crossover system, I bypassed the Alpine internal crossovers on these. The woofers are being run on an old MRP-F240 Bridged into 100W RMS each and the tweeters are on channels 1 and 2 of an MRP-F300 with the gains set to 20W RMS each. Crossovers were set on bandpass for the woofers from 80Hz to 500Hz and the tweeters at 2,400Hz and up on a high-pass crossover. Channels 3 and 4 of the MRP-F300 are powering the 30MC 3” Midrange Components at 50W RMS from 500Hz to 2,400Hz. All slopes set at -24dB/Octave. That’s an even more speaker-saving crossover setup than Alpine recommends. They say 250Hz-2,400Hz at -12dB/Octave for the mids and I’m sure the woofer-to-tweeter points are factory set around 1,500Hz with a -12dB/Octave slope if using the supplied passive networks.

So, all that being said, I TRIED to supplement the mid-bass from my sub by setting the high-pass of the bandpass on the woofers to 65Hz and they gave me NOTHING. They are very lacking below 100Hz, even at 100W RMS. There isn’t any distortion except on a few songs with stronger mid-bass and I just knock the volume down a couple clicks to avoid that on those songs, so it’s a response issue, NOT a distortion issue. Don't even get me started on these HORRIBLE tweeters. They are HARSH as can be with the hard-dome CFRP driver so I actually had to CUT my EQ down to save my ears. It did NOT get better with break-in. And even at only 20W RMS to the tweeters at a higher crossover point than Alpine uses, I STILL blew a tweeter in LESS than ONE WEEK! Even the mounting system of the tweeters sucks. The swivel mount is VERY large and requires a gigantic hole to be cut in order to use it. Some vehicles may not even be able to mount the tweeters in an optimal position. The 1” tweeter requires a 2” hole to be cut to use the swivel mounts. These are absolutely TERRIBLE speakers. I re-installed my Type-X tweeters in place of the R’s from this set and, would you look at that, a 13 year old silk dome tweeter responds to the SAME high frequency of these nasty things, WITHOUT the harshness. The old X’s give MUCH more natural and realistic sound. So, I ended up getting the woofers tuned to an “ok” sound but still they either lack the mid-bass or they are so strong that they start to distort. I have them on the lacking side to keep from popping them. Well, I ordered a set of new-old-stock SPX-17PRO speakers today because I KNOW those are amazing speakers and I can actually use them to compliment and supplement my sub.

For anyone with any questions about the old Type-X’s, you MUST drive them with a LOT of power to get them to sound right. They are advertised at 100W RMS each for the Pro’s and 75W RMS for the Ref’s, but they CAN handle about 50% more than that and they LIKE it. If you can find a set or two of those, BUY THEM. Just MAKE SURE you are running AT LEAST 100W RMS to each side. When I first got my old SPX-17REF’s, I had them at 45W RMS per side and they were lacking in the fullness. So, I bridged them and WOW. The power makes them SHINE. If anyone is familiar with “Put On” by Young Jeezy (not a rap guy but I use that for bass tests) and that 4th super low note, those HIT that LOUD AND CLEAR. They actually hit that note BETTER than my 10” R-Series R-W10D4 on an S-A60M with a measured output of 851W RMS at 2 ohms! They DO NOT even need a sub in the system.

So, you can imagine what a shock these R’s were to me when they couldn’t even belt out 80Hz when they claim they respond at -3dB to 65Hz. I’d like to see the -1dB response. I’m guessing 100-125Hz on the bottom end.

I think the S-Series speakers are actually BETTER than these. The tweeters are softer, they do great in the mid-bass area, and they can still handle decent power. I have a set of the S-S57’s in the rear of my Ranger just as a full. They are being run on a bridged (yes, I re-wired it) KTP-445A off the back of my head unit. They are NOT EQ’ed! They give MORE mid-bass than the 6.5” woofers of the R’s! They actually rattle my interior when I have the rest of the system shut off through the DSP. I had to run them like that because the DSR-1 only has 8 output channels and I’m already using all 8 for the fronts and sub. I am going to get a new head unit with the dual HD EQ and also FLAC 96kHz and I’ll just EQ them that way or I’ll eventually get a second DSR-1 and maybe that R-A90S to run another 3-way set in the back. I’ll need the DSR-1 for the time alignment alone plus the crossovers and EQ’s are better than the built-in ones in the amp and head unit. Currently I’m totaling 1,381W RMS in a single cab 2000 Ranger. It’s hitting 105-107dBA but I want to get to 120, lmao! That’s why I just don’t understand why these speakers are performing so terribly. The old Type-X’s were great until I killed one by not being careful while I was cutting the hole in the door for the 3” mid. They were creating a beautiful blend between deep and mid bass because I had them overlapping the sub crossed between 25Hz and 500Hz. 31.5Hz was too high and actually reduced the amount of bass from those. That’s how I KNOW they were going that low! I dropped the crossover frequency and got BETTER sound. Maybe the R’s are meant more for rap/hip-hop/r&b but if you try to play anything with a true melody and harmony in them, they SUCK! I will be taking the removed set back to CCA for a replacement under warranty and then I will sell the new set as new since the return period has lapsed. Hard to believe I got a better old set new for LESS than these pieces of crap. They are not worth $400 by ANY means. Maybe they’d do better with a lower powered amp and using the built-in passive network, but I doubt that.

Sorry, Alpine, I love you guys but you dropped the ball on these new R-Series with the CFRP tweeters. Maybe the previous R-S65C’s were better with the silk tweeter, but I don’t think they changed the woofer. Oh well, you win some and you lose some. Hopefully someone from Alpine reads this and sees a loyal 20-year Alpine customer disappointed and does something about it.

By the way, I’m also an independent installer, mechanic, and audiophile. I’ve installed everything from basic upgrades to full-on competition-level systems and I’ve ALWAYS recommended Alpine or JL Audio for the systems I’ve built/installed. There may be other higher-end brands like Focal or Morel, but the quality for the money has ALWAYS weighed in Alpine’s favor. JL is more expensive than Alpine and the difference in SQ is negligible, at least IMHO. Even the greatest companies out there have had there share of products flop, so this isn’t going to be a game-changer for me. I mean where else can you get a flagship speaker that wins awards from CEA and consumer reports for less than $1,000??? Some of those Morel sets are upward of $2,800 and I’ll bet the X-Series will hang right with them with careful tuning. Alpine IS made in China but it really seems that Alpine has carefully selected the factories with whom they contract and they hold those factories to very high standards. That may be why they are able to NORMALLY produce such amazing products for such reasonable prices.

Ok, enough with my rambling. Hopefully this helps with everyone’s decisions. I would highly suggest you save the extra $250 and get the X-S65C’s over these or find an old overstock set of the SPX-17REF’s/Pro’s. You’ll be MUCH happier with your purchase in the end.

Very impressive

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

Pros: smooth mids and highs, impressive bass, loud and smooth sound, 5x7/6x8 brakets and other free mounting hardware, relatively shallow top mount depth.

Cons: need a lot of power.

I really enjoyed installing this set. I appreciated that Alpine included the 5x7/6x8 mounting brackets for free. The crossovers are large, but I had no problems finding a place to install them. The box included lots of other mounting hardware for the tweeters and the mids, none of which I have used..

I have installed aftermarket coaxial speakers before, but this is the first time I have been installing a component system. The tweeters were mounted in the door sails. The benefits of using component speakers became apparent immediately. The sound stage moved up to the level of the dash board, and the highs had become more natural and live-like.

All in all I am very impressed with this component set. Each amp channel connected to these speakers is rated for 160watts. My doors had been treated and sealed with Dynamat Xtreme and Dynaliner for optimal bass performance and to eliminate rattles. These speakers can get very loud, but I have never heard them distort. The tweeters are smooth and mellow. They can play loud, but hardly ever become harsh. Mid-bass performance is one of the best things about these speakers. They produce loud, clear, and more or less flat bass response down to 60Hz. Sub bass is fairly audible down to like 30Hz, but it certainly gets weaker below 60Hz. It's not a big problem since I use a subwoofer to play lows. I have tried to use a crossover point that ends up blending these components with the subwoofer in the best way possible to stay true to the original recordings as reproduced by my Sennheiser HD555 headphones. In the end, I have decided that crossing somewhere between 60 and 70Hz is best for these speakers. Right now I have them crossed at 60Hz, with 12dB slope, and the sub is low passed at 60Hz. Given how loud they can play, I am impressed that the top mounting depth is less than 2-1/2 inches. These should fit in most car doors out there.

All in all, it's hard to go wrong with these speakers. Given the price, they're a very good value. The only problem with them is that they're power hungry. I'd say your amp channels should be rated at around at least 100watts each to make them sing best.

Great Sound, but is it worth it?

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

Alpine offers great high/ mid range sound with this component set, but I would not recommend this to anyone with a non-competition car. These are fairly expensive and you'll end up spending a lot in the long run when you have to buy an expensive amp to power these. An expensive capacitor because your headlights start dimming, and I may even have to upgrade my alternator. Trust me, go with some 40-60w RMS speakers and you'll get the same satisfaction without digging too deep in your pockets.

LOUD!

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

Overall i would have to say these speakers are one of the best sets i have owned... The woofers were a bit hard to fit into the stock locations. They have amazing highs that can be a bit overpowering i set the crossovers to -3db when i mounted them inside my door and i still have to have the deck on -2 for treble... the mids are only okay and the lows are pretty weak but if you have a sub setup that's nothing to worry about but they are extremely loud and that is a plus they sound clean through the whole range of volume

Great speakers!

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

I've had these for a few months now and I couldn't be happier... I have 2 Infinity Kappa 12s in the back being pushed by an underrated 600w amp and I wanted something that could keep keep up... these do more than keep up. They sound absolutely amazing and the amp I have running to them is only pushing about 70w to each speaker, can't wait to get a better amp and I am honestly surprised that the one I have isn't holding them back like I thought it would.

I haven't heard any similarly priced component sets to compare these to but I have had nothing but compliments since I got them, a few people have even gone as far as to say it was the best car stereo they've heard (which is believable since most people around here just have underpowered coaxials, no midbass, and overpowering bass).

awesome sound

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

I have 2 sets of Alpine SPR-17S speakers in my 98 Dodge Dakota. I don't have a whole lot of power going to them , but the sound great. Especially for the price! I got a whole lot of bang for my buck with this purchase! Thanks Sonic!

outstanding

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

these are some of the best component speakers on the market, for the price. they deliver amazing clarity, both highs and amazing lows.

some other ppl that have reviewed this item say that "the tweeters are to harsh". but i don't have a clue what they are complaining about. in my 5+ years of my car audio experience these are my favorite 6 1/2 speakers.

Great detail

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

These speakers have amazing detail. Every note is heard individually. Sounds great with original WAV files. With lower quality MP3s, the imperfections of the source music will be heard, requiring a decent equalizer to bring down the midbass a bit. Otherwise highly recommended.

Very easy to install.

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

I love the look and sound of the mid-woofers, the tweeters sound very good. Makes a nice component system to play your favorite tones.

rockin comps!!

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-17S).

amped up, these speakers sound amazing. really crisp high ends and good mid range. lacks lower frequencies however the subs i'm getting will counter that. great buy!! simple to install and well worth it.

Great Product

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

This would be the second time for me to use the speakers and on a decent amp they sound good with a little bet of base response from them given from a 9 band EQ. For the price they are a good speaker playing in all frequency's just fine.

Muddy, no real projection

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

If you like good sound, skip these. Mid sound is muddy, no real punch or projection of sound. I have kicker 6/9s that sound much better and are about half the price. I heard these at a higher end shop, they beat all the other in their price range, but that's not saying much. I'm thinking focals ps 165f, though I have not heard those yet. I'd go with just the 6/9 but they would look kind of fugly in the doors.

Super Sonic

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

I have the 50c in my dash on the Polk 2 channel amp. After break in they started to surprisingly deliver so I had to get the 60c for somewhere in my Saab 900S. I installed them in the back hatch dash and powered them on another Polk. The sound is much more balanced with the two sets. They are similar in that they do not distort. Maybe it's the amp but they are loud and clear. You can push them and then push them until your ears almost bleed and they are crystal clear. I am also running the Alpine 12 inch R on a 1200 watt mono block so I have no bass complaints. I will say there is more kick or punch with the 60c and they are breaking in still. Thanks Sonic for having a great price on these and the amps. I have two more pair of speakers off a 4 channel also. 4x10 kickers in the factory location andMartin Logan Motion in the rear seat armrests. I'm wait for the 60c to come back in so I can run two pair in the back.

Superior sound quality and great power handling

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

I have these in my GMC Acadia front doors and A pillars hooked to a 150 WPC Alpine amp. They absolutely kick and play very loud without breakup. I'm very pleased.

The tweeter rear mount rings broke on me. They're very thin and brittle. Be very careful not to crank them down.

Good...Not Great

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

Got these installed in the front doors of my 2013 Camry. Doors were stripped down and heavily matted and sealed off to welcome these speakers.

Pros.... ALOT OF BASS!!! They didnt lie these speakers put out the bass and take alot of power but.....

The ABS frame and neo magnet make for a lightweight and easy product to install.

Cons.....
The tweeter housing is HUGE and they dont provide mounting cups or anything smaller.

The midrange and highs suck...

The crossover unit for the tweeter is crossed too low causing the tweeter to sound hard and annoying at high power.
The lowpass on the speaker is too low forcing the tweeter to play all the midrange and high frequencies.

The speaker is also not too suited for playing midrange because i tried it with other crossovers so that would explain why the tweeter was crossed so low.

if you want bassy components this is the set for you.

If you want components to compliment a subwoofer and provide detailed mids and highs then your money is better spent elsewhere.

SPR 60c

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

I have had these for few months now and am happy so far. At first I had them bridged to Alpine mrv f300 amp pushing 150 watts to each. Sounded great till I turned up volume and started getting a burning smell. Well turns out my gain was set to high. turned the gain till it stopped and went up from there. Thought i was between 1/4 and 1/2 gain. Nope it was actually almost full gain. totally my fault though. Doesn't seem to be any damage to speakers that i can tell. I am now running them in active mode with around 50 watts to each woofer and tweet without the included passive crossover and i love em. I made sealed kick enclosures for em and the midbass improved dramatically. Very tight midbass that i can feel it in my chest. Just what i was looking for As soon as i get around to it i will be adding 2 more sets of these.

Good value for your money !

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

I purchased these speakers after much searching and reviews reading online. I guess I wanted a balance of quality and price, really found it here with these speakers. You can't go wrong with these speakers if you know that they produce great sound and can take a punch. My truck is a 2013 F150 Supercab, installation was so simple using the oval adapters that come in the box for speaker mount. I didn't order a wire harness adapter but that's OK, I soldered them for good ! Make sure you put Dynamat or similar. The SPR's love to pound your doors !
Haha! my friend has expensive Focals on the same model truck and when I came up to his house he was so impressed!
You don't need to break your bank account for good sound. Take all the steps and run the wires the proper way, follow all instructions and it will pay back
I highly recommend this product !
Only rating 4 stars on durability because I had them for less than a month only, otherwise I am super satisfied

beyond expectation

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

Installed these in the front doors of a 2015 Subaru WRX.
Instead of using weird adapters, I took the oem speakers out and cut them out of the housing. then screwed these into the oem housing and wired up. i tested them for a bit with my upgraded head unit. and really not much difference in sound there. but when i moved them over to the amplifier is when they really came to life. these are some of the cleanest sounding separates i have ever owned. sold construction too.

Sonic electronix always has the best value and the best customer service. All I need to say is BUY THESE!

Awesome speakers

The following review is for a previous version (SPR-60C).

Have these up front and they sound great. Only pushing them with 45rms from the Alpine ktp-445 on a mid level alpine deck. Can only image how good they will sound when i get a new deck and more powerful amp.
