SPR-17S

I just upgraded from Alpine's Type-S components (Sps-610c) which I really liked. I really wasn't expecting a monumental difference, but I was surprised. The Rs have a much stronger bass response, and the higher quality crossovers seem to convey higher fidelity sound. I was also surprised by how much more power they want. They are only rated for 30 watts rms more than the Type-S, but that really doesn't seem right. I'm giving them about twice as much power as the the Ss could handle before distorting. I can't make the Rs distort. What surprised me the most is the R's tweeters. They have a quality that I'm not going to be good at describing. Warmer? Brighter? I'm not sure, but I love it. I read a review where someone said they preferred the S's tweeters to the R's. That almost put me off of buying these, but I'm glad it didn't. He must be crazy. These speakers are overall entirely superior. Alpine has yet to disappoint me.

Great Component Speakers!!!

Bought two pairs of these and have them hooked up to a Kicker 10ZX650.4 amp and these speakers handle it like a champ are loud. They can pretty much handle any kind of music without distortion. I definitely recommend these speakers for performance and price. Once again, Sonic did not disappoint. I already have two more orders in the works. I WILL only order from Sonic. Thanks!!!

Alpine's Rock

These speakers are some of the best speakers I have ever owned. I would recommend heed speakers ten times over. They sound colorful and bright. If pushed with with right amp it'll play loud and confidence. The speakers fiver rich detail to every instrument. Some speakers seem to genre specific. I listen to all types of music and these speakers are great no matter what you're listening too. BUY THESE SPEAKERS!!!!

Front Stage

The Front Stage is the most important in my opinion and these Alpine SPR 17S do a great job. These are loud and clear, the tweeters handle the highs amazingly and speakers do a great job with the mids! Just awesome and Sonic offers the best price around, with quick shipping and customer service. No complaints anywhere.

Great speakers

These speakers are amazing. Crossovers were also easy to fit in the door panel even tho they were "large". They take high volume extremely well and are loud which is what i wanted. IDK how they bass is cuz i turned that down since i got two 10's. But the mids and highs are good.

Great value!

Using a set of these powered by an Audioque 4X90 and they sound great! The tweeters are not too harsh and the mid drivers do a superb job!

The different tweeter mount options make them easy to install in a stock location or to mount them flush where there were no tweeters before. I went with the flush mount option and was impressed with how well the set-up worked.

I would say these are one of the better sounding component sets I have ever used.

Great Value!

I use these speakers six months. Sound there is saturated, bright and clean. But needs good amplifier.
Also I use Subwoofer Alpine SWR-1222D.

loud and balanced

The type r's have crisp lively highs and rich mids. the rms is much more than a deck puts out so once i powered them with 45 watts vs. 18 off the deck ,they really came alive. WAY clean and loud mids and highs, surprising bass...with the amp. these separats jam significantly better than their two way counterparts, which i run in the back doors.

Type R's

I researched as many different component sets under $200 as I could find and it was a toss up between these Alpine's and the Polk db6501's; having heard the Type R's in a local car audio store (priced about $100 more than Sonic) I took the plunge and am very happy so far with my selection. I've got my crossovers set at 80hz and tweeters set at -4db, but I still hear some harshness at loud volumes on a few tracks but some of that can be explained by poor reproduction from an mp3 file on an iPod...CD usually always sounds better and cleaner. Bass is strong, and midlevels are a little overpowering so some EQ adjustment was needed for me (I'm using a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X993 head unit). My components are up front in the factory door locations of a full-size GMC Savana van, and had a little trouble mounting the tweeters (thanks to GM) and finding a spot for the crossovers, but nothing new if you have ever installed speakers or components in cars before. I've only had them in for about 4 days so I'm clearly still breaking them in. I'm using an Infinity Reference 475a 4-channel amp for power (rear channels are bridged and powering a ported Kicker Comp 12). I must say that these speakers are meeting all of the expectations that I had (I'm very picky and very budget conscious) and exceeding some of them; the bass response is more than adequate for my needs and the clarity is really top-notch. So far I've tested them with Korn, Too Short, Tori Amos, Tom Petty and AC/DC...all genres have come out loud and clear and never sound overworked...and the gain on the amp is only up about halfway at the moment, so I know I'm not really near the true RMS rating for these speakers. Gonna push them a little harder after I've put them through their paces for another week or so. The Type R's are very well built and the crossovers are of great quality and durability (dropped one on concrete as soon as I popped it out of the box and no problems or cracks anywhere). If you have an amp that can push more than 50 watts of RMS per channel, then go for it. I'm looking forward to many years of loud and clear music in my big a** van...these things really fill up that large cabin nicely. Thanks Sonic and thanks Alpine.

They are power hungry and mounting depth is something to double check but will crank out some very accurate and powerful sound.

Worth Every Penny

You cant go wrong with these speakers. They pretty much do it all, from bass to the highs, the entire sound range is great. I get as much bass out of these as my 6x9's, and with a little more power from an external amp, these babies are untouchable

Great set of speakers

I got two sets for all 4 doors in my 07 Yukon Denali & wow!! This speakers give good bass & clear sound. I listen to all types of music & it all sounds great the tweeters are so clear. Don't think twice & just buy them.

ultra clear! but it hurts a bit.

these are great speakers. i love listening to all types of music on them, definitely metal and acoustic the most. they do pretty good for rap and pop too. the midbass overall is great. once you break them in after a couple weeks then they start to hit a bit lower.

the thing that i can't get over is the tweeters. they sound very clear and accurate but they can get really harsh at moderately high to loud volumes. its a love hate relationship.

Best speaker i've ever had

These speakers are the best, they sound clear and the bass is chest thumping, i have no sub yet but these speakers make me feel like i have a sub. This speaks won't sound good without a good amp so you'll need an amp to awaken their power. But the only downside is the tweets burned out after a few months, but still these are the best.

Perfect speakers!

I am pleased with these speakers. Great sound and from sonic electronix they were for a great price. I am running them off an amp to get the best sound. Especially at high volume. Great speakers. The only thing I didn't like was the install took a while on my car, but that's with any speaker. Great job alpine!!

nice speakers

These speakers are a very good buy for their performance. After installing and setup was done, they sounded great after some tweaking. The highs and mid's are crisp and not overpowered and with the amp I have powering them, the Alpine MRP-500, they never clip unless I turn the volume up all the way on the headunit. If you want great sounding speakers and not break the bank, these speakers are a very good buy.

lot of speaker for the money!

I bought these based off the research I did and also the system I was buildin' for my ride.
Quality, Quality is all I can say about alpine. I've always liked them from way back in high school to now when I can afford a nice set up in my rig.
I've got 2 set's of these in front and in the rear doors powered by the 4.150 channel amp and the sound is clear and tight with absolutley no distortion whatsoever and i've tried. when the volume gets to the point that my teenage kid has to step out of the truck because it hurts her ears you know it's good.
all in all very happy will last till i sell the truck.. :-)

my spr 17s review

Ok I got these and I'm undecided. First off I am giving them 120W each side and it has taken me over a month of fiddling with them. The highs and the tweets when u power them are way over powered.. I have a parametric on board EQ and I have to turn them way down on my entire system, and the crossover is on neg 7. I might have to just skip the alpine crossover and adjust off my amps manually. Out of the box its not balanced well but they do go loud as h*** powered, but the highs hurt the ears. I also put these in a 350z, they did not fit in the stalk mounts so I had to build up the door about 3/4 inch. So get ready for some modding if u plan to install in this car.

SPR-17S Good speaker set overall A+++

I put these SPR-17S speakers in the front doors of two of my vehicles. They deliver a very good punch and excellent highs. I installed the non-component version SPR-17C in the rear doors and overall, I would say it is a very good sounding system, much better by far than the factory OEM that I had. These speakers seem to handle the bass and treble with no problem and a bit better than the non-component version SPR-17C's but if you can't use these components in your application, the SPR-17C's are very a good choice.

GOOD SPEAKERS

I have them in my back doors of the SUV, most people have component speakers in the front doors, but we want the entire truck to be as loud as possible, and this product is doing a fine job of that...

Took awhile, but they finally sound awesome...

When I first had these installed I was highly disappointed. My factory stock 8" subwoofer had to be sacrificed in the install and all my bass seemed gone. I thought the midbasses on these would pick up some of the slack, because it was only a stock 8", but guess not...

At first I felt like I had wasted my money. But it turns out the amplifier powering these was high passed at 200Hz! That's about 100Hz higher than these can safely go. Once I switched them down to about 100Hz, things were sounding better. But the final push came from a proper headunit upgrade. Running off a low-end aftermaket headunit with no real EQ settings is a waste of time if you buy these speakers. I upgraded to an Alpine Ai-X305 with the PXA-H100 audio processor hooked to it and now, finally, more than a year after the initial install, these things SHINE.

Highs are as advertised, bright and crisp due to the metal tweeter dome; sibilence can be an issue but only when you get into the max volume ranges. Woofers have a decent amount of snap to them, but nothing compared to a real subwoofer or a higher end component set.

Gave features and durability a 4 only because compared to the SPX-17PRO's, the woofer materials and crossover network features are inferior.

Very impressive

Pros: smooth mids and highs, impressive bass, loud and smooth sound, 5x7/6x8 brakets and other free mounting hardware, relatively shallow top mount depth.

Cons: need a lot of power.

I really enjoyed installing this set. I appreciated that Alpine included the 5x7/6x8 mounting brackets for free. The crossovers are large, but I had no problems finding a place to install them. The box included lots of other mounting hardware for the tweeters and the mids, none of which I have used..

I have installed aftermarket coaxial speakers before, but this is the first time I have been installing a component system. The tweeters were mounted in the door sails. The benefits of using component speakers became apparent immediately. The sound stage moved up to the level of the dash board, and the highs had become more natural and live-like.

All in all I am very impressed with this component set. Each amp channel connected to these speakers is rated for 160watts. My doors had been treated and sealed with Dynamat Xtreme and Dynaliner for optimal bass performance and to eliminate rattles. These speakers can get very loud, but I have never heard them distort. The tweeters are smooth and mellow. They can play loud, but hardly ever become harsh. Mid-bass performance is one of the best things about these speakers. They produce loud, clear, and more or less flat bass response down to 60Hz. Sub bass is fairly audible down to like 30Hz, but it certainly gets weaker below 60Hz. It's not a big problem since I use a subwoofer to play lows. I have tried to use a crossover point that ends up blending these components with the subwoofer in the best way possible to stay true to the original recordings as reproduced by my Sennheiser HD555 headphones. In the end, I have decided that crossing somewhere between 60 and 70Hz is best for these speakers. Right now I have them crossed at 60Hz, with 12dB slope, and the sub is low passed at 60Hz. Given how loud they can play, I am impressed that the top mounting depth is less than 2-1/2 inches. These should fit in most car doors out there.

All in all, it's hard to go wrong with these speakers. Given the price, they're a very good value. The only problem with them is that they're power hungry. I'd say your amp channels should be rated at around at least 100watts each to make them sing best.

Super Clear, Power Handling & At A Great Price

I have owned these speakers before and was on the hunt for a great deal. Sonic Electronix not only had them in stock with an amazing price. I picked up a set and wired them to a Alpine PDX-1.1000 and could not be happier with my purchase and putting these into the G coupe. No problems at all so far half a year later, extremely happy with the company and will do business with them again!

Great Sound, but is it worth it?

Alpine offers great high/ mid range sound with this component set, but I would not recommend this to anyone with a non-competition car. These are fairly expensive and you'll end up spending a lot in the long run when you have to buy an expensive amp to power these. An expensive capacitor because your headlights start dimming, and I may even have to upgrade my alternator. Trust me, go with some 40-60w RMS speakers and you'll get the same satisfaction without digging too deep in your pockets.

LOUD!

Overall i would have to say these speakers are one of the best sets i have owned... The woofers were a bit hard to fit into the stock locations. They have amazing highs that can be a bit overpowering i set the crossovers to -3db when i mounted them inside my door and i still have to have the deck on -2 for treble... the mids are only okay and the lows are pretty weak but if you have a sub setup that's nothing to worry about but they are extremely loud and that is a plus they sound clean through the whole range of volume

the only thing i'm not 100% satisfied with is the quality at higher levels. the low end will begin to distort the other frequencies but in the end i think that's my fault for not getting a sub to go with these.

Great speakers!

I've had these for a few months now and I couldn't be happier... I have 2 Infinity Kappa 12s in the back being pushed by an underrated 600w amp and I wanted something that could keep keep up... these do more than keep up. They sound absolutely amazing and the amp I have running to them is only pushing about 70w to each speaker, can't wait to get a better amp and I am honestly surprised that the one I have isn't holding them back like I thought it would.

I haven't heard any similarly priced component sets to compare these to but I have had nothing but compliments since I got them, a few people have even gone as far as to say it was the best car stereo they've heard (which is believable since most people around here just have underpowered coaxials, no midbass, and overpowering bass).

These speakers have amazing detail. Every note is heard individually. Sounds great with original WAV files. With lower quality MP3s, the imperfections of the source music will be heard, requiring a decent equalizer to bring down the midbass a bit. Otherwise highly recommended.
