Great Sound
I haven't owned any of these new Type S subs by Alpine yet, but they do have them in my local store. They had it powered on an Alpine 1000 watt amp and the box they used was ported. Sounded pretty decent for 15s, but could probably sound better in a sealed box. I would recommend these to those who love Alpine quality and speaker/subs.

Sounds good to me
Had this sub for about three months. Shipped from sonic. Break in period was a breeze. It handled every bit of 500-700 watts without a hiccup and sounded pretty decent in the trunk of my car in a 2.6 cube groundshaker enclosure. Had the right about of boom with Rap and punched like a sealed with Rock and handled all the dubstep I threw at it without skipping a beat. Alpine defiantly has a unique sound that I certainly approve of. Good sounding product for the money. I would say buy if this sub in this price range if it appeals to you. Should be no disappointment.

Amazing for the price
I purchased on of these a few months back and it slams. powering it on an Alpine MRX-M55 at 2 ohms, 550 watt rms in a ported box to 32hz. it sounds amazing and hits harder than anything I've owned before. You can't go wrong with this sub.

Best sub ever
I have had the type r 15 and this one sounds waaaaaay better. Alpine is the best period. I have one running at 500 rms and I can't use any mirrors at all. My rear deck by 6x9's does the wave. It's in a 2 cu ft sealed box and loves it! Love you alpine and sonic!

great price
This sub is a great deal. I have it in my 2008 Tahoe with a punch mono block and it bangs hard! It knocked of my rear view mirror off twice.

Question
Does it sound good in a ported box? If so please let me know I'm wanting to buy one

Great performance for a budget sub
Considering the low price of this sub it is pretty amazing. I would however ding Alpines quality controll. There are several locations where excessive amounts of glue are visible, which can detract from the cosmetics of a high end installation. In its price range, nothing compares IMO... as for performance, I think it is comparable to my Hertz hi-energy 15 which retails at $899...

These really pound!!!
I have 2 12" inch wired to 1 ohm and taking 500 RMS to each, they definitely pound in my sealed enclosure.
Great Sub
A great sub, I had one running on only 350W for a while and it gave great bass. I just added a second and got a secong amp to run them at 600RMS each and they sound AMAZING. Even in sealed boxes these things are super loud. If your concerned about the 24hz basement dont be. Just be sure you can run 8 gauge wire to them if you intend on running them at full power.
