review

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

The clearness of the voice in very good the bass is ok. Theses speakers are not really made for bass. Also, due to high bass the tweeter which is located on top of the cone, gets hit and makes a very nasty noise!!! I'm running a 4-channel amp with these speakers.

AWESOME HIGHS!

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

These speakers have the best tweeters of any speaker I have ever bought and I have had kicker, alpine, polk, RF, clarion, pioneer, and more. Such a clear crisp high it gave me goose bumps the first time a turned them up. I have a subwoofer so It doesn't rally mater to me but Bass is ok, About the same as my stock ford speakers but a little clearer. Fit right into my f250 door holes and the stock screw holes lined up to. After I listened to the pair I bought for the front I ordered two more for the back very happy.

Good mids; limited bass

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

Sound quality is good, but i was expecting more in the bass department. Important to note that i am not running an amp with these speakers.

Big sound for a small speaker

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

Listed as a 6 x 8 speakers, but they truly are a 5 x 7 that fits original mounts. These speakers provide great bass response, the built in cross-overs and the adjustable tweeters make directing your sound correctly a breeze. I use a aftermarket Alpine with a 45 watt amp with Infinity 5 x 7 front and these GTO-8628 in the rear. Sonic's price made these speakers a no brainer.

entry level

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

for the price i couldnt beat it. decent bass responsce, mids were alittle muddy at high volumes, as with highs. a good head unit and amp should fix that hopefully. overall im happy with them, but i would get the 4 0r 5 way pioneers if i had to order again. id say middle of the road and price point for most, not awsome, deffinatly not bad. wayy better than stock :)

Great Speakers

VERY accurate speakers for the price

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

these are very accurate speakers (as mentioned above)...
Woofer Review:
the bass response is tight...no distortion to speak of...at full volume with the bass i get punchy, tight sounds that really give the music more of home stereo feel (which is what i want)...the vocals are very strong and don't get distorted at high levels...

Tweeter Review:
The way that the tweeters are designed is very practical...on normal setups it seems that the crispy highs get driven right into my shins...to the point of not really noticing them..with these GTOs you can adjust the angle of the tweeter so that the sounds can be driven upwards towards the driver so the highs don't get lost in the bass....and the tweeters are really sweat...again no fuzz or distortion just crispy highs...

i have a amp on order for them, but really off of the head unit they are A1 components....I HIGHLY recommend these to budget shoppers and audiophiles alike...

Good Performance

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

Having had older model JBL GTO's, these have similar voicing.... good bottom end with deep kick, neutral midrange, but the poly/ titanium tweeters need taming a bit. This was without attenuating the tweeters via the switch so that's still an option. I left it as is since they were installed in the upper doors off-axis (Ford Mountaineer) and just pivoted the tweeter angles to point more towards the dome light. The upper frequencies on the EQ were gently sloped down until they sounded more natural. The bottom end was cut off using a hpf of 100hz @ -12db. They can handle going a bit lower to fullrange, but sound cleaner with that particular xover point while still having more than enough upper bass to blend with a small sub.

Powered by a 65x4 US Acoustic amp, they handle power well and don't reach breakup until the deck is turned up to max at which that point, they're LOUD! Mated with an Infinity 860W bridged on the same amp's rear, this was a great match. The overall sound is very good for a deck with limited EQ & Xover, no time alignment.

These are more than worth the purchase if you're on a tight budget. The adjustability is about as close as you can get to having a component set.

JBL Sound

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

The overall tonality & voicing on these are reminiscent of the older series GTO which is a good thing! What's even better is the ability to orient the tweeter to aim towards the dome light or wherever, plus you can attenuate the tweeter via a switch on the housing. When you amp these & high pass near 100hz (if mated to a sub), then the attenuation switch comes in handy to dial back on the highs a bit. They pump out pretty good bass, but I wouldn't add a lot of power to them fullrange. Fine for deck or small amp power (40 watts) in that regard. With an amp & crossed upwards, these suckers get pretty loud before breaking up.

Overall, these are great speakers for the cost. The poly/ titanium tweeters have quite a bit of sizzle, but can be toned down via switch or pivoting off-axis. Bout as good as you can get without using a component set with separate tweeter. I'd buy these again!

Rockin'

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

These are really good for the money. I bought four for my extended cab Mazda B-3000 and they are excellent. If you don't have a ton of cash but want great sound these are the speakers to buy. Sonic has great prices and fast shipping.

Ford Ranger Supercab

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

I installed these speakers in the rear and they sound great. With the factory stereo they gave a lower tone sound than the factory fronts. The highs when comparing front to back were crisper in the back but when played loud the factory speakers seemed on par at the higher end. Bass was much of an improvement over factory.Where the speakers really shined is when I installed a JVC KW R500 double din stereo. It gave much more power that was needed for the JBL's to show their true colors. JBL rocks with crisp highs and decent bass to keep me happy.

JBL GTO8628 Awesome Speakers

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

These speakers rock. The bass sounds great, mids and highs all sound great. These replaced some 4x6 speakers in a 04 silverado ext cab with a little trimming and use of the provided spacer between the spkr and door metal The difference is amazing. I would recommend these to anyone looking to improve the sound in there vehicle.

Excellent sound!!!!

I installed these speakers in a 97 ford f150,they totally were what I was hoping they would be!I started with an alpine deck and added the ktp-445 amp which is 45 watts per speaker.I also put some soundproofing material in the doors. Then I added these speakers, they are clean and powerful with great bass and plenty loud enough for me.I definitely recomend these speakers very highly, great quality!!!!!!

Great speakers! Sound Awesome

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

These speakers are great! I ordered them because they were the stock size for my 98 mustang, and I they seemed higher quality than most other. The rotating tweeter is great, and the woofer is able to handle some pretty good base. Because of these speakers, I actually decided to buy more JBL speakers for the back (I went with GTO938 speakers which were 6x9) Together they sound awesome

Really no downside to these speakers, they're just great. Only thing I'd consider replacing them with would be a JBL Component set

Nice speakers

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

Sound from these speakers are nice and clear. They have a nice mid range with decent bass but I got the speakers for the highs and mids. They are great for those. I have subs for the low end. I do turn off my subs some times and they do sound good as full range speakers also

Sound Great

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

Of all the 6x8 speakers i've had in my life...i would put these near the top...they sound better than the Kickers i have in my other vehicle and sound as good as the Alpines i had in another vehicle....for the money, these are GREAT!!!

Not bad, but not the best !

The hardest part about picking speakers when you are limited by door depth or speaker size opening is deciding if you want to do modifications. I bought these because I didn't want to mod my panels to accommodate for 6x9's with larger voice coils and deeper baskets and from reviews I read on these GTO8629 series speakers, they were supposed to be the next best thing to 6x9's and slice bread.

Verdict:

The highs are not as sharp as I was expecting (likely due to the cloth tweeter) but were acceptable. You will get used to it tho. If your used to ear-piercing highs like I was you will have to retrain your ears to pick up what you think your missing but aren't really missing. The range is there but they just don't scream like a metal tweeter.

The mid's are solid. No complaint's in this department They do not let down.

The lows lack on punch, but let's face it, we all know these speakers aren't subs and they are not 6x9's either. It's amazing how an just 1 inch of cone can change everything. JBL's patented dual cone design is supposed to help with this and it does, but not in the way you would expect from the reviews and the way JBL themselves represent it.

Overall: Not bad, but not the best. A great factory replacement speaker for FORD's / MAZDA's and others that require a 5x7 - 6x8. For the price they are worth the investment.

Quality Sound

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

As expected, the engineers at JBL have produced a very natural sounding speaker. These speakers have a balanced natural sound to them. When driven by a quality head unit and amp, these speakers can be driven hard while maintaining their sound integrity. The balanced design allows the listener to fine tune or tailor the sound to his or her preference. JBL produces some of the best drivers and speakers for live performance venues. They obviously engineer some of the best car audio speakers, too!

sound good

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8627).

This speakers sound good for the price not a high class one though. But a good improvement over stock. I plan to upgrade soon to the jbl components. But this work good for now. Not a lot of bass but that is what subs are for.

Awesome Product for the Money

Definite upgrade for any stock speaker. Clean bass and detailed highs. Remember, they are car speakers, not audiophile snooty material. Can't beat the price!!

JBL Still High Quality

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

I am a speaker experiment, always buy rubber surround, only caution with these speakers is 2ohm? not sure why they did that. OEM or aftermarket door speakers should not be 2ohm but have had them a month and no noticeable distortion from Pioneer head unit. OEM speakers don't have tweeters but are rated at 25w so the JBL have a better high end and take more power, so a little more bass. No grill covers or wire? do to inside door I understand grills but what about little spade connectors for speakers? overall better than factory.

great speakers

I put these in my wifes 2005 ford explorer and they sound awesome with 75watts running to each speaker .from a JVC amp mids and highs a nearly flawless but they could use a little more base but overall they are very enjoyable and worth every cent .I got these for a steal . Great product , great price , and top notch service . two things up . thanks Sonic .

Great speakers

The following review is for a previous version (GTO8628).

I have these along with the jbl 6x8 components in my 2001 ford mustang on a small clarion amp and these bad boys sing highs and mids all day. Love that the tweeters can be angled and that they have a db button on them...great for the money

Oh my gosh!

I installed these in my 1996 Ford Bronco XL. This is a night and day difference I purchased and installed many aftermarket speakers and these are by far the easiest to install and they sound absolutely incredible.
