Nice, flashy, and does the job, but missing in the sq department.
Kenwood has always been my choice for quality sound on a budget, but beyond the bells and whistles this unit falls just short of what the users want. The jog button is hard to get used to but not unbearable, although not having a mechanical flip face is making me want to use the USB feature more and more everyday. My older MP828 was much more user friendly and hassle free.
Beyond those quirks it is a solid unit. Many manufacturers dumb things down and destroy quality to make units this inexpensive, but Kenwood has a magic touch with competing against big-box brands. The unit has been in my Jeep Cherokee for over five months now and still functions like the day it was installed.
Overall it is a good buy with much stronger features than most in its class. If you have the money then look elsewhere, otherwise buy one.

KDC-X792
Love this HU, Im a Kenwood man. Takes a bit of trial and error to get it right, once you figure out the settings you will love it, sounds much better than the KDC-5's that I had.

decent head unit
Before I really understood parametric eq\'s I thought that it was bad to only be able to adjust one center frequency per band. However you will soon realize that you can much more precisely zero in on frequencies that you want to cut or boost even with just three bands because of the 4 Q- settings. Pioneers are the exact same way and Alpine is even worse with only 2 bands unless you shell out $450 for the cda-9887 or buy the imprint mod. So putting it in perspective to other brands I don't think it's half bad.

best bang 4 your buck
i bout this kenwood head unit some months ago and this it the best stereo I've had its easy to use and has alot of auido regulation features so u can get it to sound the way u want it to. it sounds nice and clear with no distortion until the last 2 number but i blame my speakers that are 90w rms and the head unit is 22wx4 rms. over all is a hell of a bargain!!!!

Performs as advertised
I can recommend this product wholeheartedly. I bought it for my son and installed it along with a subwoofer in the trunk. He loves the sound and the ability to put his iPOD in the glovebox and control it from the headunit. The one caution I would make - as a parent - is that scrolling through the iPOD does take your eyes off the road for too long. This isn't a criticism of this particular product, as they would all have the same issue. My compromise solution was to insist that he create playlists that are much smaller than his entire library and scroll through those rather than the entire iPOD. I took a point from ease of use because the controls are not as intuitive as they could be. That said, my son has no problems with them at all, so after a short learning curve, it's not an issue.

Great price
This has been a very good stereo. It was installed in a Sonata with JBL speakers. Once you have set everything up for the speakers, the sound is amazing, but you have to go through and set all the speaker settings in the stereo.

good buy
i bought this headunit and got it up and running easily. very customizeable display which is nice because i don't like all those graphics. the color of the faceplate doesn't match my car's interior and that bothers me but oh well. other than that it has a pretty crisp sound and a good amount of features. for the price it's a great deal imo.

Mixed feelings
I have mixed feelings about this unit. I bought this to replace the Shaker 500 head unit in my ’06 Mustang. Installation is easy. The features are pretty nice. The face is customizable w/ white, blue, & red, but red is too dim to see. The Parametric EQ is a nice idea, except you can only choose ONE of the bands for each bass, mid, and treble to alter, not all of them – which is stupid. Preamp input/outputs are fine. The USB port and iPOD availability is great. The RDS is awesome to have, and not many aftermarkets have that. Power is ok. I am running without any external amplifiers and it sounds clean, even at high volumes. Soundwise, it is so-so. While it is pretty clear, to be honest my Shaker sounded much better than this unit. I have two 12” Kickers in the back, which is a good thing, because this unit puts out no bass at all to the speakers (much less than the Shaker did w/ the same speakers). If I didn’t have those subs, I would have returned this unit. As it is, with the subs it is fine. The highs are also not as distinct as the Shaker was. I’m actually thinking of adding a pair of standalone tweeters to bring out the highs. It also seems that there is more high end in CD and USB mode, than in the FM mode, which can sound kinda dull at times. Overall, for the price, this isn’t a bad unit for all the features it includes, but if you want great sound quality, I might go with a different brand like JVC or Eclipse, etc.
Highs: USB port, RDS, flexibility in setup, nice power output
Lows: good, but not great sound output. You NEED a sub with this unit. Connection between flip up face plate and unit can be iffy sometimes.

I love it
I have owned this head unit for a few years now and it has been very dependable. My only gripe with it is that in the sun, it is impossible to see the screen.

Many Many Pros and Maybe one or 2 cons?
First Off, I would like to say this is one of the best looking radios I have ever seen. The main reason I bought this radio is because I like the dual knobs, USB input and AUX input. I installed this radio this morning and I have been messing around with it all day.
When I first turned this radio on I had to get the manual out to turn DEMO mode OFF. Not a big deal, once you use the manual to figure that out the only reason you will need it again is to figure out what some of the abbreviations mean that are in the settings. This radio has it all!! Well, as far as audio. One thing people have been complaining about in earlier reviews is not being able to make out what it says on the screen when in direct sunlight. Well that is very true it is hard to see while in sunlight. I wouldn’t recommend this radio if you own like a Honda civic where the radio is tilted up in the dash. For me, mine sits nice and straight and I also have tinted windows which helps but I did find myself holding my hand over the sunlight to see what was going on, on the radio. I think so far that is the only con I have found.
This radio has like 5 different display settings or backgrounds you could say. I was worried that they would be on at all times and it would bother me in the corner of my eye while driving, well, that isn’t the case you don’t have to deal with the moving backgrounds at all.
The way I have it setup which is very customizable is to have the date, time, name of song/radio station/artist/CD Title or you can even have the time show up in big numbers that go across the whole screen. As for moving backgrounds don’t worry you don’t have to have that on and its no bother whatsoever.
This radio comes equipped with RDS, if you aren’t familiar with RDS it is an option on most new vehicles and it allows radio stations to have the name of their station, artist, & song title scroll across the screen. My old stock radio had this feature and it took forever to have that information show up. The Kenwood Excelon KDC X792 comes up with this information almost immediately when you change the radio station which is a definite plus.
The AUX input is great in my case. I have a portable satellite radio and it has an FM transmitter equipped with it which can be very staticy at times which is very annoying when listening to Howard Stern on my way to work and sometimes the best part of the show gets cut out when I drive through downtown. The AUX input allows me to plug my portable satellite radio directly into the Kenwood head unit from behind which means I no longer have to listen to static ever again!!
The USB input is even better, I have a 30 Gig IPod 3rd Generation Video and I have it full with about half of my music library on it. I was able to remove my CD visor that was pretty much tearing off my sun visor in my car because I had so many damn CD’s stuffed into it well its gone now!! I never have to worry about a CD again! The USB function for the iPod is great although it seems a second or two slower sometimes then I would like it to be, I can’t complain its reading from a hard drive off the IPod. I just put it in my glove box and when you switch to the USB function on the Kenwood deck its just like scrolling through your iPod, the kdc-x792 even gives you a song repeat or shuffle option which comes in very handy.
I guess there’s not much else to say except I am very happy with this unit, it looks beautiful at night. The colors are perfect and with the current selection of Kenwood’s I have found, this is the best one for the price!! Overall, this radio is great I would recommend it to anyone that wants some serious clear sound coming from their speakers and also it has a built in adjustable crossover which is very nice when you have 7 total speakers installed in your car.
One thing I did not mention is it comes with a mounting bracket for your USB port, if you don’t want to have your USB device sitting in your glove box it has a nice mounting bracket to mount your USB port flush anywhere in your dash, I haven’t used this yet because I don’t want any wires to be seen where me or my passengers sit.
I will be posting a video soon on what this radio does. I tried to find a good video on the net to see what this radio can do but they were all junk, I will be posting one that will show you the ins and outs of this radio and everything it can do. Keep checking to see it! I could keep going on and on about how great this radio is but I don’t think I can type anymore.
Thanks and good luck on selecting your next car stereo and do yourself a favor and buy Kenwood!

Awesome Head Unit!!
This is one of my FAVORITE head units that I've ever owned. I've used Eclipse, Alpine, Premier (Pioneer), and Sony and by far this is one of the best. It is comparable in feature/sound quality as my Alpine CDA-9886 and better than the Premier and Eclipse. I would recommend this receiver to anyone looking for great sound quality at a very reasonable price.

A great radio for the price, but save your money and get the X692
First off, Sonic Electronix sent me my radio within a few days of ordering. they were very helpful on the phone when I had a question.
The radio is excellent. It offers pretty much everything you could want from a mid-level stereo at a low level price.
My one and only complaint is that you can't set up custom display modes for each source. For instance when I choose to listen to a CD I would like my display to be different then the display when I am using my Sirius radio which basically requires the 4 line display to show all the proper info: Artist, Title, Name of Channel, and Channel Number.
Also, I did have to play with it in the "advanced" menus to get the sound i wanted.
The X792 has three color fonts available, sadly these fonts aren't all that bright or interesting. I end up using the default blue..which is very similar to gray.

Great unit for the price
Just got this unit to replace a stolen Sony 9905x flagship HU. Not as good looking, but sounds A LOT BETTER than my previous receiver!
The iPod connection is perfect and you can search almost as fast as the original one!
Sound quality is also impressive! Very rich details and more deph to the audio.
The G funcions are sweet and quite accurate. It stated my car´s hp perfectly!
Overall, many of those features are not very usefull and it lacks time alignment... That´s the only flaw...
