It will work, but it will disable the chime

I didn't buy this adapter, it came with the car when I bought it used. It had an aftermarket radio installed, but the car did not have any warning chimes. At first, I thought the worst and thought that the car had the radio wires clipped off at the connector. It turned out that they used this harness.

This harness is listed on this site for the Chevrolet HHR, but it's a generic GM harness that works for GM cars built from 2005 up. The exception are the GM cars with the vehicle information display in the radio (Malibu, G6, Equinox), and the W body cars (Impala/Impala Limited/Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, and Lacrosse)

The major drawback from this harness is that you will lose the retained accessory power feature for the radio, as well as the chimes the car normally has for unfastened seat belts, low fuel, key in ignition when door is open, etc. Onstar won't work with this harness, but my understanding is that Onstar gets disabled anyways when the factory radio is removed.

The description says you don't have to cut the factory wiring, but you do have to tap or strip the wire jacket to a wire that switches on when the key is in the accessory position. Alternatively, if you don't want to mess with the wires behind the dash or don't know which wire will power when the key is in the "ACC" position, you can simply jump the red accessory wire to the yellow power wire, which will keep the radio powered at all times, so you would have to be mindful of making sure the radio is switched off when you exit the car.

Overall it gets 4 stars since this disables chime, R.A.P., and Onstar, but also because it is not 100% plug and play considering that you must essentially know how to get the radio to work on the acc position.
