Game Changer
The only reason I did not give this unit 5 stars was because of the lack of a disc drive. This unit is exceptionally tuned to work with iPhone 4 and newer generation apple products. If you rely mainly on digital media devices and have thrown all of your CD's in a box and put them next to the box of all your old cassette tapes, than you should have no problem falling in love with this unit. On the other hand, if you still use CD's frequently than this is not the unit for you.
The FREE appradio app pioneer offers in the appstore makes the entire experience unlike any other double-DIN touchscreen. Pandora works flawlessly, and google maps blew me out of the water with how well it runs. You can navigate the map directly from the screen and not the phone, and the same commands work as do when using the phone normally. ie. pinching two fingers together to zoom out, etc. The hands free Bluetooth also works like a dream, importing your contact list, letting you search through missed calls, recent calls and your address book. Sound quality and reception is clear, and the GPS booster gives the iPhone that extra edge it needed to be on par with the leading GPS systems in terms of loading speeds.
Youtube and Netflix do both work, but run separately from the pioneer appradio app. The processing speed of this unit is very very impressive making it quick and easy to navigate from window to window and the responsiveness of the touchscreen is also exceptional. Adjusting the music settings is very user friendly, allowing you to adjust the EQ curve exactly how you want it. For beginners Install may be too much, but if you know your way around car audio fairly well and have installed other products before, than you should have little problem installing this unit yourself.
The only other draw back I encountered besides the lack of a CD drive was the fact that there is only one set of RCA's in the back of the unit, meaning that if you have two amplifiers, one for your speakers and another for a subwoofer or two, than you will need two RCA y-splitters with a 1 male --> 2 female connection in order to be able to wire the headunit to two amplifiers. One signal can be used being that both amplifiers have built-in crossovers.
If you have an iPhone 4 and looking for the newest and coolest of touchscreen radios with GPS AND built in Bluetooth for hundreds less than the next best option with both features built in, than this is the radio for you. Apart from the difference in price with comparable units, you also have the option of watching Youtube and Netflix on-the-go in your car and who doesn't want that? With future compatible apps being planned or in the making already, this may be the last radio I ever buy.
This is a 5 Star product in terms of functionality, innovation and appearance, but I do not think we are ready to leave the CD drive in the dust quite yet. If this unit had a CD drive it would be the best radio on the market bar none. I knew I was getting a good product having previously owned other Pioneer radios, but this unit uses technology in ways I had no idea were possible. This thing is truly a game changer. My hat goes off to Pioneer for this one, well done guys. A+++++
