rugged and reliable
I have used the Pyle PPHP1098A for over 20 slide presentations since I bought it and it's a great piece of equipment. I plug in the audio from my MacBook pro and the audio from a hand held mic. There are no bass or treble adjustments but the built in settings sound well balanced to my ear.
It's a little heavy but very rugged.

Light Weight, Big Sound, Small Venue or Monitor Speaker
I bought my first PPHP1098A powered speaker over a year ago, to use as a floor monitor for my solo acoustic guitar and vocal act. I love the way it can be tilted back so that the horn and speaker stay in vertical alignment while on the floor. The pole mount makes it even more versatile as a monitor. I have since bought three more from various vendors, whenever they are on sale. When I play in smaller venues, I have been using two of these for main speakers. Great for acoustic guitar. They can be chain linked together using a regular microphone cord. I have never plugged a microphone directly into one of these so I can't comment on that feature. I have played music from an iPod through them during breaks. They sound great for that purpose.
I have always preferred 10" speakers over 12" speakers and these seem to cover the sound spectrum well. The on board power amp keeps your set up simple and quick and doesn't add much weight to the speaker enclosure. The 600 watt rating claim is probably a little overstated, but they are plenty loud for my purposes.
The PVC enclosure construction makes them aesthetically pleasing and has withstood the rigors of transportation, set up, and breakdown well so far. I Wish there were covers out there for these, but I have not been able to find any. I handle them personally and cover them in a blanket while transporting them. They have not been handled roughly so I can't comment on how the electronics would hold up under harsher handling conditions (roadies). I did have to return one that was handled badly during shipping. The box must have been dropped and there was something rattling around inside the enclosure.
I would say these are semi-professional quality. They are not EV or JBL but are a good bang for the buck. I would recommend these for a home rehearsal studio, weekend warrior, or a band needing spot monitors.

Great speaker.
The speaker is as advertised. Great power and volume. Handy inputs for an instrument or audio source. I find it to be a real good value.
