durable, comfortable, good sound quality.
This is the second pair of sony mdr-as40ex headphones I have owned. I bought the first pair more than 5 years ago, and I only had to buy a new pair because I lost the first. The old pair was in perfect working condition-- and I was not gentle with them. The only sign of their age was the paint, which had worn off long ago.
The flexible in-ear and over-ear parts make the headphones really comfortable, since you're able to choose which size to use. Also, if you lose those parts, spare parts are available to buy online (on amazon or ebay, and probably elsewhere). The over ear parts make it easy to get the cord tangled when you put them in your pocket or bag, but I'm willing to put up with that because it's not a problem when you're actually using them.
Most importantly though, they sound great. My other headphones are the Bose over-ear noise canceling headphones, and I can switch between those and my sony ones without noticing a huge loss of sound quality (I just have to turn the volume up for the sony ones). Actually, when I run in high-traffic areas, I turn my music down a bit so that I don't get hit by a car, because the headphones block out so much external noise.
Overall a solid pair of headphones, I highly recommend them.
