Very disappointing considering the my Sangean U3 is such a great radio. I bought for portability and rechargeability. Batteries cost $20..not Sangean's fault. Looks like it could take bein dropped as it has a roll cage. I dropped 4 feet, while off, and blew the speaker. Cord wrap bound while wrapping cord and one side broke off. Reception was poor, too! Not sure its even worth the time and expense to send back for speaker repair. Will probably replace with another U3 and skip the rechargeable batteries and added portability.

Basic radio no frills

I needed a basic radio for a wilderness camp with over a dozen members. We've had many radios donated most of which were old or obsolete "mini boom boxes" with various non-working cassette or CD players. This should fill the bill; 2 knobs and a handful of setup buttons, not complicated. I didn't like the "boomy" sound from the single speaker so I packed some polyester sound fiber to fill the void behind the speaker to kill some of the vibrations. Sounds way better now, more neutral than stock. It really needs a tone control but this helped.

Big Sound

This radio is simplistic with no tone control and only 5 AM and 5 FM presets, which, in an area such as the DFW metroplex, it would be easy to fill 10 presets on each band. The sound is really full and, although it is primarily used for talk radio and sports, it has a rich tone, even for the speaking voice. It has a unique, somewhat illogical, power system that allows it to operate on AC with battery backup (4 ea. C cells) or on DC (4 ea. rechargeable C cells) that are recharged when the radio is not in use. I like the rechargeables, but would prefer that it kept them charged and treated them like conventional batteries. I do like its smaller size (compared to the tool manufacturer's radios), which makes it easy to cart around and position in a workplace. I suppose the Army green color makes it look less obtrusive, and I am surprised it didn't come in camo.
