Metra 99-8231 Dash Kit

Decent product, not many options

The product is flimsy plastic and the bottom of the front cover tends to bend. I can see (barely) between the cars dash and the bottom of the cover. The optional bin also has holes in the back of it, so you probably don't want to store a small USB or coins in it. Typically I will put my cell phone in it along with the remote control for my radio unit (big things). With that said, its a pretty cheap way to install a radio into my Camry 2005 so I can't complain. I also don't believe there are many other options unless you are a DIY kinda guy. The product definitely works as described and if you only have a little knowledge of DIN systems setting it up should be easy. The Design sits fairly flush to the dash, but is fairly basic and of plastic build. I doubt its very durable due to the loose plastic but you shouldn't be worried because it should just sit in your car.

The textured plastic matches the design of the car well, and if I had installed it correctly, it'd look good in my car too.

The instructions didn't mention anything about the car's original metal clips that support the head unit. I installed this assuming that the metal clips that the original head unit connects with attach alongside the plastic clips of this product. It was very frustrating to see that the dimensions didn't match right and the supplied screws were too short to connect. I persevered by buying longer screws and breaking off much of the plastic clips that interfered with the metal ones. Eventually it all came together but the front now doesn't sit correctly in the dash. If I installed it how they intended then it'll probably fit perfectly. So I'll give it another try.

Good Dash Kit for the Car

This dash kit looks great. It has a seemless look. Blends completely with the oem dash. The only problems I had were that it was a bit confusing how to use it for my single DIN installation. The instructions have a picture that shows you insert the single din radio in through the front of the dash kit. Or maybe that the instructions from my radio manual. But the point is, it wont fit. Single DIN is 2"x7" and the opening is far less than that. So if you are doing a single or double DIN install with this kit, be aware, you most likely need to install the radio from the back of the front plate. Another thing is that the plastic is a bit bendy/flimsy. Lastly, I found that I could not get the two lower mounting screws to go in without cross threading because the mounting tabs got in the way of the screw hole. I did some modification with a file to allow for a clear space to be made and that solved the problem. Screws went in straight with no cross threading.
