Selecting the Proper Speaker for Your Application
In order to select the proper set of speakers for your sound system, look at the RMS (root mean square) power-handling rating. The RMS power is the amount of power the speaker requires to operate safely. It also refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle on a continuous basis. Full-range car speakers – which contain all elements in one for lows, mids and highs feature a woofer and tweeter both molded into the speaker. Some include midrange drivers.

They also have midranges and external crossovers, which send separate frequencies to the woofer and the tweeter for a more efficient reproduction.
