I installed these in my Harley fairing, but they sound "thin" with no bass. Are they defective?

No. These are SPL (Sound Pressure Level) speakers designed for extreme volume and midrange clarity, not deep bass. To prevent damage and improve sound, you must use a High Pass Filter (HPF) set to at least 100Hz–125Hz on your amplifier.

Can I use my factory radio to power these speakers directly?

It is not recommended. While they are efficient, these speakers have a high power handling of 100W RMS. A factory radio (typically 15W) will clip easily at high volumes, which can overheat the voice coils and eventually "burn" the speakers.

Why does the tweeter sound much louder than the woofer?

These use a horn-loaded compression tweeter which is naturally very bright. If it’s overwhelming, use your head unit or DSP’s equalizer to "cut" the frequencies around 4kHz–8kHz. This balances the output for a smoother listening experience.

My speaker terminals look different than standard ones. How do I connect them?

The NEO series uses heavy-duty "high-current" terminals. Ensure you use high-quality female spade connectors that fit snugly. If the connection is loose, vibration (especially on motorcycles) will cause "arc-ing," which can melt the terminal solder.

The speaker is rubbing against my factory grille. Is there a spacer I should use?

The SX 165 NEO has a "tall" profile due to the integrated horn tweeter. If the tweeter touches the grille, it will cause distortion or physical damage. You may need a 1/2" or 1" PVC spacer ring to provide the necessary clearance.

I hear a "cracking" sound at high volumes even though I have an amp. What's wrong?

This is usually "mechanical bottoming." Even with a "NEO" magnet, the cone has limits. Re-check your crossover settings; if the HPF is too low (e.g., 60Hz or 80Hz), the cone is over-extending. Move the HPF up to 150Hz to see if the noise stops.

Are these speakers waterproof for use on a motorcycle or boat?

They are "Weather Resistant" (UV and humidity treated), but not waterproof. They can handle splashes and moisture, but you should avoid direct high-pressure water contact. If installing in a fairing, ensure the mounting hole is properly sealed to prevent

The Hertz spl show so 165 neo speakers are worth the money. 97db. Sensitivity makes them extremely loud, they are very clean sounding . Sound system is tuned to volume 42 out of 50 and even at that volume theyre crisp, clean and LOUD ! They do lack a little mid range bass for their size.

Sonic Electronix offers open box and damaged box specials on some products and man what a deal I got!! $140 off this set of speakers and the box had a tiny little ding in it. The speakers were not affected at all. These speakers are the way to go in a Harley-Davidson application. Very clean, crisp and clear and they deliver excellent clean mid bass, mids and highs…. Paired with an Soundigital amp, these speakers scream!!! Outstanding quality!!!
