Building on the core technologies developed for the TW5 thin-line subwoofers, the TW3 series embodies a powerful combination of shallow mounting depth and long linear excursion capability. The result is a speaker that delivers big, impressive sub-bass performance in a compact form that works for those snug-fit installations. Thanks to the TW3 thin-line architecture, the deep, powerful and articulate JL Audio bass is now accessible in more applications than ever. The 10-inch subwoofers require only 3.25 inches of mounting depth, while the 12-inch models take just 3.50 inches.

An aluminum-alloy dust cap aids with heat dissipation, extending the speaker’s power handling range. A JL Audio logo adds a finishing accent to the dust cap’s rich satin black finish. Known for its durability, the TW3 series’ injection-molded, mica-filled polypropylene cone design offers impressive frequency response and deep, powerful bass reproduction with minimal distortion. Proprietary motor, suspension and cone modeling systems are used to achieve long, linear excursion capabilities with low distortion and powerful sound output. The result is tight, clean, articulate bass performance at all power levels.

How do I wire this 12" sub to get a 2-ohm load for my mono amplifier?

This is a Dual 4-Ohm (D4) subwoofer. To achieve a 2-ohm load, connect both positive terminals together to the amp’s (+) and both negative terminals together to the amp’s (-). This "parallel" wiring maximizes most mono amp outputs.

The sub fits the depth of my box, but the "ears" don't sit flush. What's wrong?

The 12TW3 uses a Tab-Ear mounting system rather than a full circular rim. If your enclosure's cutout is a perfect 11.0625" circle, the "ears" should sit flat. If they aren't, you likely need to slightly notch the wood where the ears rest.

I’m building a very slim box. Does the back of the magnet need a "breathing" gap?

No. Unlike most subs, the TW3 has no pole vent on the back of the motor. You can mount it with as little as 1/4" of clearance from the back wall of your enclosure without risking overheating or mechanical damage.

My sub is making a "popping" sound during heavy bass hits. Is it broken?

This is often mechanical bottoming. Because this sub has a massive 15.2mm excursion, ensure the cone isn't hitting the floor, seat, or a grille. You need at least 1.5 to 2 inches of "stroke" clearance in front of the woofer.

The terminals are hard to reach once the sub is in the box. Any tips?

Because of the Concentric Tube suspension, the terminals are tucked in. Pre-wire the leads to the sub terminals before dropping it into the cutout. Use 12-gauge wire to ensure the spring terminals hold a tight, rattle-free grip.

Can I use this 12" sub in a ported (vented) enclosure?

Yes, but it is optimized for tiny sealed boxes (0.80 cu. ft.). If you go ported (0.95 cu. ft.), you must use a subsonic filter on your amp set to approx. 25-30Hz to prevent the shallow suspension from over-extending and failing.

I replaced my old subwoofer with this one, but it sounds airy or weak—what could be the reason?

The TW3 moves significantly more air than standard shallow subs. Check for air leaks around the mounting ears. Use a gasket or high-quality foam tape to create a perfect seal; even a tiny leak will ruin the low-end response.

What is the "correct" screw to use so I don't crack the mounting tabs?

Use #8 or #10 pan-head wood screws. Do not use countersunk (tapered) screws, as the wedge shape can put outward pressure on the plastic mounting "ears" and cause them to crack over time under high vibration.

Best shallow mount sub

Unbelievable! Best ever!!!

I have 1x 12tw3-d4 installed in a 2020 f150 crew cab platinum in a down fire under rear seat non ported box powered by a rd500, integrated with a lc2i pro and it freaking slams!!! Nice pure clean real bass! JL audio is the top of the line in my opinion! Don’t question it just buy it and you will be overly happy!!
