In keeping with its “tight-spaces” mission, the 13TW5v2 is optimized for enclosures that are far smaller than most 12-inch woofers require and only a bit larger than the air space needs of a typical, small-box 10-inch woofer. The mounting system is designed to fit in about the same footprint as a typical 12-inch woofer. The 13TW5v2 is best used with amplifier power in the 250W - 600W range and is optimized to operate in a 0.80 cu. ft. (22.7 liters) sealed enclosure.

My subwoofer box is 7" deep, but the sub won't sit flush. Is it defective?

No. This sub requires a very specific 5.625" diameter clearance behind the mounting hole for the motor structure. If your box has internal bracing or a shallow "step" inside, the wide magnet assembly will hit it before the flange seats.

The sub fits the hole, but I can’t get the screws to grab. What's wrong?

Because this sub is heavy (20+ lbs) and has a shallow frame, standard wood screws can strip the MDF. Solution: Use T-Nuts and machine bolts. This provides a permanent, airtight seal and prevents the sub from vibrating loose over time.

I built a sealed box to the exact specs, but the bass sounds "choked." Why is that?

This sub is highly air-displacement sensitive. If you used too much polyester fiberfill (poly-fill) inside a small 0.80 cu. ft. box, it can over-dampen the cone. Use a light layer on the walls to ensure the "concentric tube" suspension can move freely.

Can I mount this sub firing downward under my truck seat?

Yes, but you must maintain at least 1.5 to 2" of clearance between the surround and the floor. If the cone hits the carpet during high excursion (11mm Xmax), it will cause mechanical noise and eventually tear the mounting surround.

My amp is 500W RMS, but the sub barely moves. Is it underpowered?

This sub has a high power handling (600W RMS) but a large 13.5" surface area. Ensure your amp's "High Pass" or "Subsonic" filter is set to 25-30Hz. If it's set too high (50Hz+), the amp is cutting out the deep bass this sub is designed to play.

The terminal wires are touching the back of the magnet. Is this a fire hazard?

Yes, it can cause a short. Because of the "Concentric Tube" design, the terminals are close to the motor. Use 90-degree insulated female spade connectors or heat-shrink tubing over the wire ends to ensure no bare copper touches the metal basket.

I’m hearing a "clacking" sound at high volume. Is the voice coil bottoming out?

A clacking sound usually means the mounting screws are hitting the internal motor structure. Ensure you are using the correct length screws that don't pass through the mounting ring into the sub's frame.

Can I use this sub in a ported (vented) enclosure for more output?

JL Audio specifically optimized the 13TW5v2 for sealed enclosures only. Using it in a ported box significantly increases the risk of "unloading" (over-excursion), which can permanently damage the unique suspension system.

Great sub

Classic JL Audio subwoofer. Does what it is designed to do. I'm only running 1 in my vehicle and although it would be nice to have 2, I don't need two.

JL is still the best!

I got 1 of these on a Slash 1000/1 running at 4ohms which is why I wanted the Slash for its regulated power supply. According to the power rating for this sub I am overpowering it (I'm definitely voiding my warranty) but I can tell you undoubtedly the 7" VC can handle it. I'm at 3/4 of the IS and I have not clipped once and after a little bit of tuning it is up there w/ some of the best single sub setups I've ever heard. I read a lot of reviews saying it has trouble with lower notes but I think people were tuning it like a normal sub. I set my low pass medium lower and tuned out the junk and I can tell the difference big time. I think most people are missing the low frequency on their subsonic and just think think it's not capable. Once I got my amp set I can't tell you how happy I've been w/ the sound and the quality of my equipment. I have always been a JL but for good reason. No other sub IMO is more complete w/ such a robust sound. I'm not just amazed with the capability of this sub but the fact it was designed and engineered completely from the ground up and it still has that distinct JL sound up and down. It's quite amazing a sub less than 3" deep could even compare to a W6 but it does. The cost was high but if you want the best you have to pay for it and you'll be glad you did. I don't recommend putting a 1000w to it but at least you know it can take it.

great sub small box

Got two of these subs because i needed more room and the 13w7 was taking up to much. I love the big sound and the small size.. not like the w7 but still a good clean sound.

O man, where to start, this sup is just amazing clean clear, bass i have never heard a sub sound so good, the way it hits is just crazy, love love love, the only problem I had and has nothing to do with sub, is sonic put a signature required when they shipped it, fedex did not want to let me pick it up, as they said we will try again tomorrow, I said I would t be there tomorrow because I work are the next day are the next day after that, but In the end I was able to pick it up,
