Monoblock Class D Subwoofer Amplifier

The JL Audio RD1500/1 is the highest-output monoblock in the RD series, specifically designed for serious subwoofer applications that require massive amounts of power. Like its siblings, it utilizes NexD high-speed switching technology, but it is uniquely equipped with a "Low Z" switch, allowing it to deliver its maximum 1500 Watts of power into either a 2 ohm or a 1 ohm load.

The RD1500/1 is built for high-demand systems. It features the signature LED clipping indicator for precise gain setting and top-mounted controls protected by a cover. Due to its extreme power output, it requires substantial electrical support, including 2 AWG copper wiring and a 150A fuse.

The "Power/Status" LED is solid Red. Is my amplifier defective?

A solid Red LED indicates Protection Mode. First, check your ground; it must be to bare chassis metal. Next, ensure your speaker load is not below 2 ohms. If the light stays red with speakers disconnected, check for a blown fuse.

How do I use the "LED Clipping Indicator" to set my gain correctly?

Play a 50Hz test tone at 3/4 volume. Turn the Input Sens. up until the ring glows Amber, then back it off until the light stays off. This DIY method prevents "clipping," which is the leading cause of blown subwoofers.

I have no sound, but the Amp power light is Green. What should I check?

Check your Input Signal. If using RCAs, ensure they are in the "Input" jacks, not "Output." If using speaker-level input, ensure the "Input Voltage" switch is set to "High" and the "Turn-on Mode" is set to "Offset" or "Signal."

Why does my amp stay on after I turn the car off?

This happens if "Turn-on Mode" is set to "Signal" but your factory radio is "leaking" a small voltage. To fix this, change the switch to "Remote" and run a dedicated 12V switched wire from your fuse box to the "REM" terminal.

Can I wire a 1-ohm subwoofer load to this RD1500/1?

No. This amplifier is stable down to 2 ohms only. Wiring a 1-ohm load will trigger the protection circuitry, causing the amp to shut down or sustain internal damage. Always verify your final impedance with a multimeter.

What gauge power and ground wire do I need for 1500W RMS?

You must use 1/0-gauge 100% Oxygen-Free Copper (OFC) wire. Using 4-gauge or "CCA" (aluminum) wire will starve the amp of current, causing it to overheat and significantly reducing your bass output.

Why does my amp gets extremely hot and shuts down during long drives?

This is Thermal Protection. Ensure the amp has at least 1–2 inches of air clearance. If it is mounted under a seat, ensure the carpet isn't blocking the heat sinks. Also, check that your Gain isn't set too high, causing the amp to overwork.

What is the "Low Pass Filter" and where should I set it for my sub?

The LPF blocks high frequencies your sub can't play. For most DIY installs, set the LPF knob between 60Hz and 80Hz. If you have a ported box, also ensure your Infrasonic (Subsonic) filter is turned ON to protect the sub from over-excursion.
