The W1v3 is an outstanding choice when your build provides space that is very tight and amplifier power that is respectably moderate. The driver features a shallow mounting depth (3.86 in. / 98 mm) and a compact motor structure, allowing it to comfortably fit in a lot of spaces where a typical 8-inch driver will not. Lacking a pole vent, the rear of the motor structure can be placed directly against an enclosure boundary. In addition, excellent excursion capability and linearity allow it to reproduce sub-bass with striking extension and quality. Several of JL Audio's proprietary technologies enhance its performance and reliability. This includes JL Audio's patented DMA, Elevated Frame-Cooling and Floating Cone Attach Method™ technologies.
Dynamic JL Audio Performance
The 8W1v3 Subwoofer can be driven with as little as 50 Watts. However, for best audio performance it is recommended to run an amplifier capable of between 100 - 150 Watts of continuous power per driver, like the JL Audio JX250/1. In addition, these subwoofers are optimized to operate in either a ported or sealed enclosure, needing only 0.350 cubic feet of air space in a sealed box and 0.50 cubic feet in a ported/vented enclosure. (Specific dimensions and figures can be found in the user manual, linked further below.)
Striking Linearity and Control
DMA is JL Audio’s proprietary Dynamic Motor Analysis system and is aimed at delivering superior dynamic stability and low distortion. As a result of DMA optimization, W1v3 motors remain linear in motor force over an extreme range of excursion and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. This leads to tight, clean, articulate bass that also allows for extreme linear excursion, phenomenal power handling and control, control, control.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
Round/Circle: This is the typical and common subwoofer design. They have a round cone and are a circle in design.
Square: These woofers are able to achieve a greater cone area in a smaller space. Because of the greater surface area, some square subwoofers will be louder than a round subwoofer of the same size.
Recommended Enclosure Specifications
Sealed: These enclosures completely enclose the air inside the box. These boxes produce a tight bass.
Ported/Vented: These enclosures have a slot of air to escape from the box. The result is a sound that has more "boom".
Bandpass: These are a combination of both sealed and ported enclosures. They can be very efficient, but require tuning for the best response.
Shallow mount speakers will typically have a mounting depth of 2" or less, while shallow mount subwoofers will typically have a mounting depth of 3" or less.

After a lot of research, I’ve come to learn about JL Audio, this subwoofer just reeks quality, it’s a shame to have to put something so nice under a seat and hidden from view. But as we all know it’s about sound too and that is where this sub really shines,
I originally was going to buy a self contained subwoofer amp combo, boy am I glad I didn’t, this sub rocks in my cut down box with only 0.35 cf of interior volume, that was the recommended cubic feet by JL Audio,
The fit under the passenger seat was perfect on my Sprinter Van and the bass is awesome.
If I ever buy any speakers again they will be JL Audio, if I wouldn’t have already bought JBL’s component speakers and Polk tweeters, JL would be my choice. Plus who knows, I still may change out the JBL door speakers for JL Speakers, the amp I’m running this sub with is a Alpine MRV-M250, which seems to be a perfect match. The price at Sonic beat out every other vender I found and also threw in a free sub box, great deal, I highly recommend.

I had owned a 8W1V2-4 a few years back and it lasted quite a while until I messed it up. I then decided to go a cheaper route and get a MB Quart shallow 8. I had it for a year and decided that I wanted my JL sound back and the shallow was not cutting it.
I upgraded back to the newer version 8W1v3 and placed it in a .5 ft cube ported box in my 2007 F150. I am still tuning the amp and have not reached the full potential but cant wait till it does.
