    Amplifier Specifications

    Amplifier Class

    An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

    Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

    Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

    Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

    Number of Channels
    Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. The most common setup is a monoblock amp to run subwoofers and a 4-channel amp to run door speakers. Check out our Knowledge Base for more information.

    Total RMS power is measured by multiplying RMS power per channel by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

    RMS power is the amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.

    The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.

    Maximum Input Gauge Size
    This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. For example, a 4 gauge wire is thicker than an 8 gauge wire and thus has higher current carrying capacity. Always do your best to get this size wire to reduce the risk of damage to your components.

    Speaker Level Inputs
    Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.

    Preamp Outputs
    Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.

    Built-in Crossover

    A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

    When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

    Low-Pass Crossover Frequency
    The low-pass crossover frequency is typically used for subwoofers. It can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable low-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies below the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies above the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

    The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

    This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.

    I have had this amp running for a few months now. I upgraded my old pdx 1.1000 to this amp (old is still sweet) There was a noticeable power and sound difference where amps clipped used smd dd1. This amp uses a lot less power, than the old one. Light dimming went away without an extra battery or big 3. I was disappointed by the fact that the mounting holes are in diff spots and had to fix up amp rack to hide holes. Just fyi, these don't stack with the old pdx amps. I'm running two 13w6v2's on this amp, and it barely warms up after a couple hours of working hard. It puts out better sq than old pdx, producing richer bass. This amp is great, but lacks a couple features eg. bass boost. or at least they could include the volume (rux) knob for the price.

    I just bought this amp to replace the new JL 1000/D that I was pushing my two alpine type r's the newer 1223/D model I have them in a dual slot ported box in an 03 tiburon and this amp slams I can beat on them from one town to the other with this amp and it barely gets toasty I would recommend this amp to anyone who is looking for some serious power.

    A powerhouse, but take your time to set it up right

    When I first installed this PDX-M12, it sounded a little "thin" compared to my previous 500W Class D amplifier. Turned out that I needed to adjust the gains somewhat. Now it delivers all the clean power that I, or almost anyone, would ever need from a subwoofer amp. And it's small enough to fit below the front seats of most vehicles. Great product.

    This amplifier is in a class of it's own. No other amplifier pushes my RF T2 12 like the Alpine M-12. This amplifier never gets hot, has amazing clarity and is easy to tune. I do not want to list the amps that I have used to compare this with but the M-12 wins hands down. The price paid for this amp is worth it's weight in Gold.

    Not the most powerful amp I have ever owned but definitely by far the cleanest. A bit pricey for the power but you probably won't find cleaner sound from any other company or amp. Very small and compact easy to hide (if you want to that to this beautiful amp). Made my 2 12's not only pound but very musical. Would recommend to anyone who wants a super clean system.

    I haven't had a chance to install this amplifier yet but this review is solely based on my experience in ordering this product. I was a bit skeptical at first because Sonic wasn't an authorized Alpine dealer but after opening the box, everything looked like it was just shipped from the factory. Andrew was my salesperson and he patiently answered all my questions and followed up with me whenever I left a message regarding shipping or additional questions about the product. The amplifier was delivered to me within 3 days which included free shipping. Add to that, I received a great price as well. What more can you ask for.?     although i didnt buy this amp from sonic, cuz it wasnt in stock when i needed it jus like most items are never in stock when you need them with sonic, i got this and hooked it up to a RF T2412D and this little guy is so powerful and efficient, doesn't heat up, doesn't draw too much current and im still running stock electrical and a optima yellow top, but just to be on the safe side i have a 2 farad RF cap to keep things running smooth, this amp delivers. i would buy it again if i ever need to

    This is the 4th PDX amp I have owned. I have the first gen amps in another vehicle, and was impressed so the new ones are now in my new vehicle. Birth sheet says 1376 watts RMS. They are driving my two 10" Fi SSD woofers very nicely. No problems overheating and nothing to complain about. The stacking feature is fantastic, and they are a nice clean amplifer. 4th order crossovers are great, but that is all you get. Made for power in a small effecient size. No bass boost, phase adjustments or other crap that some of these other manufactures are loading their amplifiers up with.

    Since this is a Dual coil can i run two separate amps alpine pdx m12 and use a watt meter to match the gains perfectly to 1000rms? the signal will be coming from alpine pxa-h800 using rca splitter to both amps so they get the same signal

    Best Answer: Vishaal, are you asking if you should run or can you run two separate amps to that one dual voice coil subwoofer ?
    If so please understand that a dual voice coil subwoofer is designed for different wiring configurations.
    Ok, here goes, I believe you are talking about what is called "independent wiring" , now understand that a DVC subwoofer offers the same performance whether it's wired in series or parallel. It's power handling levels, frequency response, and other specs do not change other than the impedance that your amplifier will see.
    Now, you can wire each voice coil to a separate channel of your amp, if you are NOT going to bridge the amp. Independent wiring is a nice option if you're wiring two DVC subs to a 4 channel amp (one voice coil per channel) . However please be very certain that the signal going to each voice coil is EXACTLY the same or the differences WILL cause distortion.
    In regard to the source signal it should always be as pure and untamperred with as possible ! In other words no deviation from how it was originally designed/intended to be.
    In my conclusion, while two amps certainly can be wired to run one subwoofer, I high recommend that you DO NOT do so !

    I want to use this amp to power a Jl12w7ae is this too much power, and does anyone know what the peak power of this amp is?

    Best Answer: Hello,

    According to JL Audio, 1200w RMS is too much power for this sub, as it puts it in the 'Warranty Void' area. "Optimum" , according to JL Audio is 750w RMS. Its not uncommon to overpower the 12W7, but obviously its not recommended.

    In regards to the 'Peak Power'; "Peak/Max Power" is a useless figure, and therefore Alpine does not provide one.
