The JL Audio JD400/4 is a versatile and compact 4-channel amplifier from the JD series, designed to deliver high-fidelity sound with great efficiency. It uses NexD high-speed switching technology to produce clean power while minimizing heat and strain on your vehicle's electrical system. It is fully bridgeable, meaning it can power four speakers, two speakers and a subwoofer, or two high-power speakers.

The JD400/4 is built for both ease of use and professional-level performance. Like other JD models, it features integrated LED clipping indicators around each input sensitivity control. This allows you to set the gain correctly just by watching the lights, ensuring maximum output without distortion. It also features dual-range, differential-balanced inputs to reject electrical noise and accept a wide range of signal levels.

The status LED is solid Red and I have no sound. Is the amp dead?

Red indicates Protection Mode. First, check your ground; it must be to bare chassis metal. Next, ensure your speaker load is not below 2 ohms per channel. If the light stays red with speakers disconnected, check the 40A fuse.

How do I use the "Integrated Clipping Indicator" to set my gains?

Play a 1kHz test tone at 3/4 volume. Turn the Input Sens. up until the ring around the knob glows Amber, then back it off until the light stays off. This ensures maximum clean power without risking blown speakers.

My amp stays on after I turn the car off and pull the key. Why is that happening?

This happens if "Turn-on Mode" is set to "Signal" or "Offset" but your radio "leaks" voltage. Change the switch to "Remote" and run a dedicated 12V switched wire from your fuse box to the "REM" terminal to fix the battery drain.

I have sound from my front speakers but nothing from the rear. What's wrong?

Check the "Input Mode" switch. If you only have one pair of RCAs, set it to "2 Ch." so the amp pushes signal to all 4 channels. If you have two pairs of RCAs, set it to "4 Ch." and ensure all cables are seated fully.

Can I bridge this amp to run two subwoofers?

Yes. You can bridge Channels 1+2 and 3+4 to get 200W x 2 at 4 ohms. Connect the (+) of your sub to the Ch1 (+) and the (-) to the Ch2 (-). Warning: Never bridge into a 2-ohm load; it will overheat the amp immediately.

I’m hearing a "hiss" or engine whine (alternator whine). How do I stop it?

This is usually a Ground Loop. Ensure your RCAs are not run next to your main power wire. If the noise persists, re-ground the amp to a different, sanded metal point and ensure the "Input Voltage" switch matches your radio type.

Why does my amp gets extremely hot and shuts off after 20 minutes?

This is Thermal Protection. Ensure the amp has at least 1-2 inches of air clearance. If it's under a seat, ensure carpet isn't blocking the cooling fins. Also, check that your Gain isn't set too high, causing the amp to overwork.

What gauge power and ground wire do I need for this amp?

Use a 4-gauge 100% Oxygen-Free Copper (OFC) wiring kit. Using 8-gauge or "CCA" (aluminum) wire will cause voltage drops, which leads to the amp clipping or entering protection mode during high-volume peaks.
